I came from a small town as was in for the shock of my life moving here. The crime rate is terrible, drive by shootings, road rage shootings, kidnappings, child abuse, you name arizona has it. Even though the sheriff is doing his best, the crime rate continues to esculate. What I researched on the net did not compare to moving here. I have a 16 year old and pray every night that nothing happens to him. My opinion is that if you look at who are commiting the crimes, that will answer your question.

Do you believe everything your cousin tells you? Possession and ownership of fully automatic weapons is subject to federal laws. Those laws are applicable in Arizona. Not everyone in AZ can legally own a firearm, let alone carry one. There are numerous restrictions-age, felony convictions, domestic violence, etc.
GunCite - Gun Control: Machine Guns
13-3101 - Definitions
13-3111 - Minors prohibited from carrying or possessing firearms; exceptions; seizure and forfeiture; penalties; classification

Believe me, I did try on many occasions. Ever had a conversation with someone and while looking into their eyes you thought you saw the back of their head? Similar experience...

Certainly, it must be the guns, after all the places with the most strict gun laws are the safest, right? For exmaple, LA, Detroit, Cincinnati, NY, NJ, DC, etc. Then you have those “blood bath” cities & states with less gun control like Alaska, Vermont, Montana, Wyoming, Kennesaw Ga., KY, etc. It’s amazing with all those guns in those “gun friendly” states that babies aren’t killing each other for their strained peas! Jeeze
Yes it is possible to own a machine gun in AZ, just like it’s legal to own one in most states. It simply requires extensive government compliance including Chief Law Enforcement Officer “sign off”, photographs submitted, fingerprints, FBI background investigation, transfer taxes, etc. but once you’ve completed all this you can own a machine gun. I’ve only ever heard of one case where a legally owned machine gun was abused and that act was perpetrated by a police officer. So I guess it’s not those who own guns (machine guns or not) who are the problem, it’s the criminals.
So it’s not that AZ has a gun problem so much as it has a criminal problem.

I'll be bringing my daughter with me, and I tend towards the "insanely protective" of her. Why is it that Arizona is number 46 out of 50 on children's safety, does anyone have any insight into that?
Thanks in advance for any input!

Well Said!
It is of course.. the person behind the gun who is the problem.
If your intentions are to go out and do harm to your fellow man
with a firearm, your the problem.. not the firearm.
Extreme penalties, like mandatory 25 years for a convicted felon
found with a firearm helps, But we need harsher penalties for these
under-age gangbangers who go around toting a firearm.

I have thought about taking a class and getting a small firearm. I grew up with guns and learned at a very early age (ouch) not to touch my dad's police revolver. We did not have them in the house when our kids were growing up, but now that they are all grown, we are considering it. We still have 440lbs of curios canines. Crime is up everywhere.
