Arizona has moved to the 44th spot in education! Would most states celebrate 44/50, probably not. But when someone makes the last in education or 48th in education remark, we can have a rebuttal now

44. ARIZONA
> High school graduation rate: 79.5% (8th lowest)
> Public school spending: $8,131 per pupil (2nd lowest)
> 8th grade NAEP proficiency: 34.8% (math) 31.1% (reading)
> Adults with at least a bachelor's degree: 28.9% (22nd lowest)
> Adults 25-64 with incomes at or above national median: 47.7% (16th lowest)

Children who are raised speaking English as a second language often face additional academic challenges at American public schools. In Arizona, only 79.4% of children are raised by parents who speak fluent English, one of the smallest shares of any state. This unique academic hurdle faced by a relatively large share of children may partially explain Arizona’s low graduation rate. Only 79.5% of high school students in the state graduate with a diploma compared to 84.1% of high school students nationwide.

The large share of ESL students and low graduation rate may suggest Arizona needs to invest more in its education system. The state spends only $8,131 per pupil per year on its public schools, the second lowest per-pupil education expenditure of any state in the country.

Meanwhile, India beats the pants off the US in STEM, and spends about 200 per student years.

Ask someone from India what their parents think of their education. It is highly prized in their culture and parents put a lot of pressure.

Here in the US, the parents get mad when a child has too much homework or get mad at the teacher when the student fails.

Funding is only the smallest piece of the puzzle.

India had made great strides, but in the whole their education system massively lags most of the developed world. Literacy rates are poor with a massive gender gap, secondary education (age 15+ in India) attainment isn't high, massive problems with infrastructure.

Don't let yourself get fooled by narrowing a sample down to those that are buying a good education in private schools, something the vast majority there cannot do

According to the numbers the state puts out, March 2017 was the most recent, we have been above $9k per student per year since 2014. The 2016 numbers also don't reflect the $3.5 billion from prop 123 yet. Wonder why the numbers from the OPs article are so different than what the state puts out.

Some districts are throwing more than $23k per student per year at it and they aren't seeing large benefits from the added money. Money isn't the sole answer to the problems, increased parent involvement would help way more than cash.

And again, does Santa Cruz County, the smallest, really need seven school districts with seven central offices, and a county superintendent?

Education is one of the reasons Amazon passed on Arizona (Phoenix/Tucson).

One of how many reasons? What was the weighting?

I must have missed that press release. If you have a link to something that states that you should pass it along, it would be an interesting read.

For every Amazon failure, there have been plenty of others moving in. I suppose Tesla went to Nevada for the great schools? And Toyota moved to Texas? Has a lot more to do with regulation and taxation. It has been well documented that Amazon is one of the worst tech companies to work for.
