I am currently living in Tucson but I'd like to be a little more centrally located in AZ because I am an outdoors person and have family up north. I'm looking for a place that is preferably outside of the most extreme summer temp region.

I'm past the urban phase of my life and want somewhere quiet, and don't mind critters. Development is fine, I just cannot swing the cost of places like Scottsdale, etc

Are there any affordable communities outside of PHX that might fit the bill?
Is Prescott Valley a mid-range choice?

I am a 50 yr old woman in excellent health, in a graduate program in SoCal, which I have to commute to once a month. I have job experience in social services. As long as I am within an hour drive of shopping I can meet my needs.

Define "affordable".

And are you looking to rent or buy?

As far as temps go, there's Wickenburg. But it's not a lot cooler than the Phoenix metro. IMO it's still pretty hot at 100 or 102.

At this point I am looking to rent, as eventually I'll relocate once I finish my master's and take the state exam to be licensed in my field.

My current rent is $650 for a one bedroom, but if I move I can probably go up to $900 max.

If you really want cooler temps, I'd recommend Prescott Valley.
It's 60-90 minutes into Phoenix assuming no accidents on I-17. Rte. 69 through PV can get REALLY busy on the weekends though.

I live in the Verde Valley, the rental market is very tight so it's possible you could find a 1 bedroom apartment for $900 but I don't think there are an abundance of them.
