Default Moving to Yuma

Hello,

My husband and I want to plan a move to Yuma in about 5 years. I know to some this may be to soon to start planning the trip but it makes me happy to think about a move. We chose Arizona because of it's climate. I am wondering from you what it is really like there. Please be honest. I would like to know what the average temperature is in the winter and what is the best neighborhood in Yuma. When we move we will have a 13 year old with us so I will need a good neighborhood and a good middle/high school. And can you tell me what the employment is like for nurses? My husband and I will both have our BSN in nursing when we arrive in Yuma. Thank you for any responses.

Michelle

I dont mean to sound so negative. I am speaking so honestly. I have gone to Yuma many times since 1995. I know it quite well. It's nearly impossible to find a job there. In 2002 I was promised a wonderful job at a vet clinic. I stored up my belongings, I quit my job. I packed and moved from Iowa. When I got there the clinic told me to come work on a Saturday. I came in, and they said they had never heard of me. I couldnt find any work. Not even at a Mc Donalds...I had to return home when I ran out of money.
In 2004 I went back. This time I still couldnt get a job, But that wasnt my worst problem. The heat reaches 128 degrees by day and gets very cold at night. They recycle waste water that is laden with parasites. I was thrown down a boulder filled hill in broad daylight by a drug addict who kidnapped me. He drugged me. He threatened my life daily. He beat me up. And he raped me. I did escape after some weeks. I went home with post traumatic stress disorder, and still suffer with it and depression. He made me drink that water and it made me very sick. I tried for 2 years to get the police to even talk to my assailant. I knew his name, address, etc. They wouldnt get involoved. I decided to write because you mentioned you have a child. Yuma is not safe. There are wonderful towns in Arizona. Casa Grande, Douglas, Holbrook, Windslow, and Williams are great places, but I cant recommend Yuma. I used to be intrigued by it too. But after no work, the kidnapper, the worms, and losing my 11 year relationship there, I cant say anything nice about it. I hope you find much happiness wherever you decide to go.

This is for the previous poster....... Yes, Route 66 towns are cool!!! BTW not all water carries parasites. Not all towns have water stations where you have to bring a jug to buy safe water to drink. Liver flukes are not fun. And its not a good time seeing creatures when you are finished in the restroom and have to get Vermox to get rid of them. Do you know about the fish at the water treatment plant? When that dies, and they pay a guy to feed it and keep an eye on it, then there are major problems. Think Montezumas revenge...

Hi Michelle,

Yuma winters are nice. I think that Feb is our coolest month with highs in the low to mid 60's. It has only hit freezing twice in the 15 years that I've lived here. The summers are hot with at least a couple months of highs in the 110's. Highs around 120 and not uncommon. Finding a place with a pool will help make the summers seem less oppressive. We spend a lot of time at the river. It's hard to say what things will be like in 5 years. You will probably want to research neighborhoods/schools prior to making a move. I understand that there is a good demand for quality nurses.

There's not much to do there in Yuma. I've been there for a few months last year and I have to tell you that I was bored sick.

The only real fun to do there is Lake Martinez. I went there last year for Memorial Day weekend. It was a lot of fun. But that was about it.

Yuma has nothing but bars and clubs to go for fun, when you don't want to go to Lake Martinez. Oh, there's the Marine Corps base, but I think you have to be a guest to be invited in (I got to go in, because I used to have a friend that worked inside the base). But that's about it, I'm afraid.

Oh, yeah, way, WAY, WAY too hot!!! That place gets up to 125 degrees!!!! YIKES!!!

I'm very sorry for what happened to you. You have to realized that a majority of the population of Arizona are drug addicts and alcoholics (mostly meth users and "potheads"). So, since being here I've never trusted anyone, really. I stay to myself until I move.

But I'm very sorry for what happened to you. Are you doing better?? Do you still live in Arizona??

Default Excuse me?

A MAJORITY of the population of Arizona are drug addicts and alcoholics? Not even hardly. Sounds like you run with the wrong group. Is Meth prevalent in AZ? Yes...it's prevalent everywhere. About 3% of the population is involved in serious crime and most of that crime is drug and/or alcohol-related. Do we have alcoholics? You bet...not sure what area doesn't have alcoholics. But to say that the MAJORITY of Arizonans are drug addicts and alcoholics is just plain silly.

Default Just moved here

Hello. I just moved here from Arkansas this past January, and I have to say, our family loves it. We live in the Foothills where it is very quiet and friendly. I have read alot of people saying that there is nothing to do here, but I have to disagree, especially if you like the great outdoors. Tons of hiking and camping. We have been on dune buggys, boats, ATV's, all before the end of March. Sure, it is starting to get hot, but I have to say the days it has already hit above 100 degrees have not been bad at all. I much prefer this to the humidity found in the east. And when you can trade in all the ice and snow found elsewhere for swimming pools, I'll take it.

But to jump on the band wagon with the whole negativity thing, I can say that I do have to dust...... EVERY DAY!! What a World!!
