Default Green Valley?

Fill me in on Green Valley, AZ. What I read it's Valhalla. Any truth to this?

Hi. We are renting here for the winter and have only been here a week. if you like golf it is a great place to be, also there is swimming pools in each section of our complex. Weather is a tad cool right now to use these. If you like walking it is a paradise, shopping is so - so but Tucson is only 20 miles away. Our next door neibour is a year round resident, and tells us it is very quiet during the summer as most places are winter rentals. Hope this helps a little. Cheers Derek

Question What's the deal with Green Valley?

What's the deal with Green Valley. What part of the desert is green? Is this artificial (as in a lot of golf courses) or is there something real about this?: Also, I'd like to know if it is generally cooler in Green Valley than Tucson.

Default Green Valley AZ

Green Valley is named after the green cottonwood trees that used to fill the valley from the Santa Cruz River. This river runs from Mexico north into AZ. It is usually dry now but occasionally fills to flooding from the monsoon storms in July/Aug. There are pecan groves that provide green now. There are still lots of cottonwoods trees left too.

I was just in GV for the month of September 2007 and the whole area was greener than I've ever seen it. Beautiful.

Green Valley has homes for any type of income. There are inexpensive villas, one and two bedroom units, all the way up to million dollar homes.

A big disadvantage is the lack of a hospital or emergency room in the area. The drive to Tucson, 20 miles, can seem like an eternity if you're taking someone to emergency or visiting someone having surgery.

There are a couple good restaurants, La Placita, my favorite.

About 20 miles to the south is Tubac where you can buy souvenirs, pottery, art, and enjoy the day walking around from shop to shop. Also the Santa Cruz spice shop is nearby, a great place to buy chili powder or coriander or whole pepper corns at reasonable prices.

Lots to do in this area south of Tucson.

However, I don't want to encourage anyone else to move there. The building boom still seems to be charging ahead eating up the desert acre by acre and sucking the aquifers dry.

I just moved to Green Valley two months ago. After searching many areas of the United States for the best retirement home, I decided Green Valley fit the bill. The pecan trees definitely add to the greeness. The sky at night is worth a million dollars - a nearby observatory mandates downward lighting only and this keeps the night skies very visible. The people are more than friendly. This may be in part because most residents have relocated here and are willing to make new friends easily. The streets are wide and clean. The shopping is limited but there are many small shops which you learn to appreciate. There are many more positives than there are negatives. Why not come to visit?

My husband and are looking to slowly relocate south (fr. N. CO) and like the idea of small AZ town. We are therapists and holistic (hands on) healers, PhD's that would like a part time (retirement style) practice in a small community. Is there anything left for us folks???

This type of work is quite popular in Sedona, but perhaps it IS too late for you to join... Maybe you should find your niche in a place where it's not so wide-spread yet.
