Indeed, and I heeded the signs (actually I knew the rules in advance) and got my permit and enjoyed my drive down to the river and the night spent there. It was pretty hot that night (mid-September?) and my friends hated the heat, but I still enjoyed my short stay. It's a popular place to either take out or put in river boars (I think it's take out). Nobody but me and my friends were there during the evening. I always enjoy seeing another aspect of the Colorado River gorge and I've seen many, although I usually enjoy the overlooks more than being right at the river. Without a boat there's not a lot you can do with the river except look at it, and IMO the river is prettier up on high.

Anyway get your permit in permit areas. Even if you don't get caught it's better to do what's right. It's Native American land and if they want a fee they deserve it.

Default res police

Also have never heard of such a thing as any cars being impounded driving on dirt roads. Most of the roads on a reservation are dirt and that is how you get somewhere. If some one had their vehicle impounded I would suspect there were other reasons.

I agree with you. If this was the case as an anglo we wouldn't be able to go onto the res unannounced to the government or the police and travel around to pickup children for vacation bible school. But of course I can only speak about the Navajo reservation that I have been on just north of Holbrook AZ. The res police seem to be very nice there, as a matter of fact in the area that we go to I don't see them very often but when I do they are very nice and don't seem to mind anglo's being around. There are some of the people who live on the res that don't like us being there because of our religion vs. their religion.

I lived on the Flathead Rez for ten years and all the Tribal cops and game wardens I ever had any contact with have been very polite and friendly. Of coarse not being a tribal member and not even an Indian I always bought and carried my tribal recreation and fishing permit. When I was chatting with a local tribal game and law enforcement officer while riding my motorcycle on a tribal logging road he asked me why I had a hand gun hanging on my belt in the holster. I answered "because the second amendment of our constitution allows me to" He said OK, be careful and stay on the roads. I answered I'll pack out any trash I find while I'm hiking around and I wont shoot at anything I'm not supposed to. ( We were in a wolf, lion, and griz range ). It was not hunting season and we said have a nice day and went our ways. I have nothing bad to say about any reservation police officers. One more thing. In the town I lived in, whenever a meth lab was raided there were Town Police, County Sheriff's Deputies, State D.E.A. officers, C.S.K.Tribal police, and on occasion the Feds. They seem to work smoothly on the raids and get the job done very well. Oh by the way Hi to you all on this board, native and white. I dwell on the Montana board and lurk on others but having lived on a Rez. I had to spout off ! You guys in Arizona sure have a pretty state.
