Please, please, please, do a search on the forum for your answers - both the AZ and Phx forums. This question is probably THE most asked question of them all!

Just remember, Jellogirl . . . Snakes and Spiders are more afraid of you than you are of them.
Bottom line . . . leave them alone and they will leave you alone.

Bummer's advice is on the money. Leave 'em alone and you will have no problem. We have lived in Fountain Hills for 15 years and it is the living together with wildlife of the Sonoran Desert that is one reason we love the town. In all that time I have personally seen only three snakes in our yard only one of which was a ratler, which the local Animal Control Officer removed and released elsewhere. Scorpions are something that every home has the potential for in the Phoenix area, it is just that some people think that because they are not seeing Scorpions they don't have them. Not so. A good pest control service can greatly reduce the incidence as ours has but we will still see two or three a year inside the house. I just gingerly sweep them into a dust-pan and release them outside. In Fountain Hills in particular, but also to some extent in the other areas you mentioned you will encounter creatures of the desert. In FH we have had Coyotes, Javalina, Tarantulas, Woolf Spiders, 3 Snakes, Bobcats, One Mountain Lion, Black Widows etc etc in our yard and never had a moments problem other than having the ratler removed. We don't make the animals feel threatened and in return they don't bother us.
Finally, Jellogirli, I strongly recommended Fountain Hills as a great place to live. Good luck with your move.
