I lived in Payson, AZ for about 3 years and never even saw one scorpion. But, when I moved here to Globe, I discovered scorpions for the first time in my life. My step-son's dog noticed a white thing moving on the floor, which I realized was a baby scorpion. I used a hammer to destroy the critter. But, the dog Obie got bit on the nose. I dissolved a little piece of a Percodan, wet it and put on his nose. I saw 3 more over the next few days. So, my old standby I used during the 25 years in Florida, plain old Boric Acid. I literally put it everywhere inside the house and all along the exterior. I did not see any scorpion for over one year. So, I did the same procedure and so far, I have only seen dead ones. There are over 700 different kinds of scorpions and they can go without food for months on end.

I use to have a cockroach problem, but lately I only find their legs. I keep hoping that something non-human-hurting is killing them, but I have a feeling I have a scorpion in the house. Anyone else concur?

There are over 1,500 known species, about 30 or so in AZ alone. And yes, they can go for a very long time w/o any food or water, sometimes well over a year, thanks to their extremely slow metabolic rates.

Could very well be. Spiders are also cockroach killers. Whatever the case, sounds like something in your house is hunting down the roaches. Nature's own pest removal.

Be careful with young children - the smaller the child the more harmful a scorpion sting can be. Some children can have extreme reactions. Shake shoes out before putting on - pull bedsheets down before crawling in - and yes cats work great!

What do you do if your stung by a Scorpion? I know this has probably been discussed, I just don't have time to search for it right now.

We do have some scorpions in the area I live in, my neighbor was stung just this week. She is OK though, I have only seen two in the five years I've lived in this house. I found a small dead one in the garage, and found a very tiny one here in the house a couple of years ago. Had to have been a baby.

So if your stung do you require medical attention or can you just tough out the pain and be OK? I'm speaking of adults here, I know that when your talking about children being stung medical attention is a must.

I'm not a physician. Daughter in law is. When queried, her advice was to seek immediate medical attention.

The reason is that dependent upon the medical condition of the person who got "stung", a scorpion bite may prove to be very dangerous. Lots to do with the meds being taken, age, health history (particularily coronary) etc.

Better safe than sorry
