Most people will see a tarantula (or even simply hear the word 'tarantula' muttered) and scream and/or cower in fear. Thanks Hollywood! Thanks for distorting a wonderful creature and making it out to be some monster. And Id also like to take the time to thank the wonderful wives-tales that surround tarantulas, too. Thanks for butchering an innocent tarantula's reputation and spreading needless fear throughout the gullible masses. There's nothing to be afraid of, tarantulas are just big spiders, that look menacing, but most are complete teddy bears. ![]() |

Look, particularly if you are moving into a brand new home - remember that the builder just finished disturbing a lot of dirt / soil / ground. Home to many critters! Including various breeds / types of bugs like Scorpions.
Don't panic. My advice is, and has been, BEFORE moving anything into that new home, get a good pest control company to give the outside AND inside a complete spraying including around the fences, patios, garages, closets etc. IF you are already in, and other have already mentioned this - get the "Bug Guy" out NOW - and regularly - especially during the summer! Also, go to your local Home Improvement center and get a GOOD (not cheap) Insecticide for "critters" - there are different ones for different bugs. Keep some on hand - and if, by chance, you see a scorpion or black widow, use the spray FIRST - BEFORE hitting them. People have been known to use the newspaper to swat one of these bugs and MISS - and now the critter is on the loose. SPRAY THEM FIRST - then nail 'em. Good luck |

Yes indeed, I used to have one (Nhandu vulpinus)! I used to collect many colorful tarantulas, some of which would have dropped your jaw, they were sooooo gorgeous with sooooo many different colors.

You sound just like my son. If it crawls, slithers or can be found under a rock he's on it. Last year he was thrilled when he caught an Arizona King snake in the Prescott Dells. I don't mind when he catches the none venomous snakes and keeps them for a while at home but I draw the line at Rattle snakes. So far he has caught 1 on our driveway, had him relocate it a few hundred yards away from the house. Since this thread was about scorpions I'll give my 2 cents. Seal the house tight including covering the roof vents with screening. Get a UV flashlight and check the house with it - they glow under UV and are very easy to spot. |

Does he know the "red on black, friend of Jack, red on yellow, kill a fellow" rule? And yes, you offer good advice about keeping scorpions out of the house. Seal it off, remove scorpions using a blacklight, its the most effective way. Theres no guarantee that the house will be 100% scorpion-proof though, theyll find ways in no matter what. ![]() |

I know that there are scorpions in the desert areas of Arizona, but do people have trouble with them in their houses up in the Pine/Strawberry/Payson areas too? thanks.
