So I would assume off-roading is pretty popular down there?

I might stay a few nights in Yuma this summer and bring my truck down to the dunes, rent a few quads.

Yep, lots o peeps got sand toys here. Yuma has two distinct seasons. Sand Season (Thanksgiving through Easter) and River Season (Memorial Day through Halloween).

If you come down this summer, with the exception of a few Border Patrol, you will pretty much have the dunes to yourself.

I wasn't given any warnings at all. As a matter of fact, one of my principals even told me that I was doing a good job. Then they turn around and don't renew my contract. This is the thanks I get for working without complaining when they forced me to stay after hours while I was having an asthma attack.

Jaada, I thought the unemployment rate was like 24%. They are predicting it will go to 30% before this depression is over.

yeah it might be that high but heres an article for everyone to read so dont take my word for it Yuma third highest in nation for unemployment - Topix. i just went to ypic last week with my husband and they told us if we are not attached to this place to move cause yuma is the highest in the nation right now for unemployment rates and as a matter of fact we have been for a while now. the school advisor told me that we should consider moving to another area because the prospects of getting a job in our field here is slim to none.

I already know I am going to have to move. It seems like the only jobs I see listed for Yuma are part-time. I feel sorry for those who bought houses here and lost their jobs. There are a lot of teachers in my district who did buy houses here and lost their jobs. At least I just have an apartment. It should be easy to get out of my lease since I lost my job.

I figured it might be too hot actually for the dunes right now, we might wait until the fall.

How's the river? Do a lot of people get in and swim, or is it limited to jet-skis and boats?

The majority of the river is diverted at Imperial Dam 20 miles upstream from Yuma. The small flows that make it to Yuma are perfect for splashing around, tubing and canoeing. Aside from a few small fishing boats, the Sheriffs air-boat and a few jet-skis, the local river is mostly bathers.

Above Imperial Dam the river is still big and is usually bank-to-bank boats/waverunners on the weekends (yesterday wasn't too bad ) but access to the main channel usually requires a boat. The backwaters are usually too warm and full of aquatics to be enjoyable for swimming. Also, there is Senator Wash Reservoir. It is usually full (water) on the weekends. The water is nice but the shorelines are for the most part rock/gravel.

Very close. As soon as you get out of the city and on to the freeway it's a 5-10 minute drive.
