The plan is realistic enough. Hwy 89A is well traveled as it is one route to the Grand Canyon and the route to Lake Powell. Also a major artery to the Navajo Reservation,ie Tuba City. The drive is easy enough. They have really worked on the road and it is mostly 4 lane to the turn off to Tuba. Starting from Flagstaff, you leave the high elevations within 5 miles and the rest is desert and does not get really any snow.
If you picked the northeast side of Flagstaff to live in, that would take a great deal of time off the trip as driving through Flagstaff can take awhile. The biggest problem you might find is affordable housing in Flagstaff! It is fairly pricey these days, so I would start there by finding if there is a place for you to live.
