Not to sound callous, but your uncle is 31 and he has NEVER worked? I mean, I know people who have felony convictions and manage to find construction work, cook jobs, and even went into business themselves and are making decent livings...is he even TRYING to find a job or even has the motivation to go out and look for one? What was he convicted of? Short of murdering someone, I would say his options are certainly limited, but there is always something he can try to do to make a few bucks here and there. I don't have any felony convictions, but I delivered newspapers for a year when I moved to Florida just to make ends meet, and I know they didn't check us for felony convictions there...
Secondly, where do you live? Are you close by, where you can check in on them and really see for yourself what the situation is and offer help? I feel bad for your grandmother, but with an able bodied 31 year old with her, he needs to step up to the plate and do what he can to help her and his situation. I see this all the time, and it is a shame when responsible adults (such as yourself) get stuck in situations where you are forced to have to help people who are not responsible (not your grandmother, that is). If it's financial aid they need, and you can afford to help, then I'd say do it. But, I would not get into a habit of bailing him out all the time-I'd have a heart-to-heart and tell him he needs to swallow his pride and get a job-and that's the last time you can bail him out. Then, worse comes to worse, let grandma move in with you if possible-doesn't she get disability/social security or any income at all? But as for the ex-con, he's a grown man who made his own bed. He is still young, can work, he is either lazy or thinks he's too good to dig ditches or throw papers. |

my uncle has tried everything from gas stations to mines no one will hire him because he was convicted of assault on a police officer.
and as far as dissability or social security for my grandmother, the state said she didnt contribute enough when she was able to work which was almost 30 years ago. im trying to get her a grant but im having a hard time with it. |

I know alot of construction companies that don't do background checks, what type of work can he do? What are his skills? What about a truck driver? What about delivering papers? Floor installer?

So your uncle never had a job BEFORE his arrest? But no matter. Rehabilitated felons who've paid their dept to society have the right to work in America. There are jobs he can get with a criminal record, regardless what the crime was.
Have him contact the state of Arizona Employment Board. They specialize in rehabilitative employment of people who have been out of the workforce for a long time. Here's a link: https://www.azdes.gov/esa/jobs/jsinfo.asp Other contact info: Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Phoenix District Office 3300 N. Central Avenue Suite 690 Phoenix, AZ 85012-1848 Phone: 602-640-5000 TTY: 602-640-5072 |

if he REALLY wanted a job.. he would have one.
if he is a tweaker, and LOOKS like a typical tweaker.. then no.. no one is going to hire him. construction clean up, dishwasher, motel handyman, fieldworker, farm hand.. tons of labor jobs.. if you are willing to do the work. can't imagine someone 31 years old and never having a job.. time for Grandma to kick'em to the curb.. sorry, not meant to be rude, just realistic. i am old, and not in good health.. but could still find a job if i really wanted one.. lol! |
