Default Dewey a superfund site?

I read in our Flagstaff paper that Dewey, specifically where Young's Farm used to be, is now a Superfund site because of the high arsenic in the water. Anyone know a bit more about this issue? Please enlighten us about it.

Not so much Young's Farm, but the old Iron King Mine site. Here's a couple of links which are helpful. Feds plan cleanup for Arizona mine site
NPL Site Narrative for Iron King Mine - Humboldt Smelter | National Priorities List (NPL) | US EPA

As far as I can tell the problem does not reach as far as Young's Farm and the "Dewey" area. It seems to be more in the "Humboldt" area.

Thanks again for this info. After reading this information I agree with Grechen B. Dewey is far north tobe an unsafe zone.

Yep. The EPA Superfund site is south of Young's Farm in what used to be Humboldt. There is an old quarry (Iron King Mine) on the west side of Hwy-69 and an old smelter on the east side Hwy-69. The problem mostly has to do with arsenic and other nasty chemicals leaching into the soil from the quarry and smelter. Some of the wells near this area have elevated levels of toxins. I do not know how much wind blown material is a problem, if any.

The town voted about 6-12 months ago to request that the site become an EPA Superfund site to get government-help to clean it up. The town deliberated for months and months as to whether to ask for help. I never understood why the decision took so long. It seemed like a no-brainer to me.
