Sheriff Joe Arpaio is not only patrolling the streets now but the snack bar, too.

Arpaio announced Tuesday afternoon that juvenile inmates in the Maricopa County jail system will no longer be able to buy candy and other sugary products from the Inmate Canteen.

Sugar-loaded items such as brownies, soda, cookies and candy have been taken off the shelves. There will, however, be a variety of "healthier" options made available.

The new snack items range from beef jerky and sunflower seeds to yogurt pretzels and fruit snacks.

i am neither an advocate nor a critic of arpaio (or perhaps i guess you can say i am both an advocate and a critic) but i see nothing wrong with this decision. i hope, at least, that it can be used as a "treat" on special occassions or something.

All that sugar is not healthy for kids anyway. So kudos to the decision.

The less comforts they are given while incarcerated... the less they'll
want to come back!

I support Sheriff Joe's decision.
I just wonder when some civil-rights attorney will get involved. I am sure that Joe is on solid legal ground.

Prisoners lose many of their civil rights once convicted of a crime...Sheriff Joe knows exactly where he stands and pushes it to the very edge. He is a tough guy...I would not want to be in his jail...but that's the whole idea, right? Plus, why spend taxpayers money on special services for inmates?

Good point, TurboD . . . hopefully, this isn't "exciting" enough for the Media Ho ACLU.
