Arizona is crowded in the Phoenix Metropolitan area and is plagued with pollution, water woes, heat (120 plus in this concrete city during summer), allergens, and other items too many to list but... nice in the winter, improved flow of traffic because of loops, and great shopping areas. You must love dirt, have sense of humor and be able to avoid contact with Michigan drivers. <tongue in cheek>
![]() Many of the once small Arizona towns are growing like weeds because of Castle and Cook and other insensitive developers who have their eyes on the almighty dollar and have virtually overbuilt the scenery. But.. I moved to southeast Arizona in 1977 because it was the most beautiful desert in my eyes and because of the vastness... I can appreciate the growth because that means there are others who see this area as I do... in all its glory... The locals will tell you that you will either like Arizona or hate Arizona. There doesn't seem to be any middle of the road stuff going on here. ![]() |

I live in the Central Valley of California and even though the Central Valley has an area of only 27,280 square miles, this Valley has a population of over 6.5 Million.
Arizona has an area of 113,998 sq mi and a population of 6.1 Million,so in other words,I don't think Arizona is that crowded for it's size. |

Taking into account those cities, I would guess that two million would be more accurate. Even so, you have to understand that the Central Valley is pretty spread out and doesn't consist of any really huge metro areas. Much of Arizona still has a good share of open space ... BUT most of our population is crammed into the Phoenix metro area. So I guess the answer to the original poster's question is: it all depends where in Arizona you want to live. If you choose my favorite spot (the White Mountains), you'll have very little in the way of crowds. However, if you choose Phoenix or its suburbs, it's almost a carbon copy of southern CA as far as traffic and long lines. |

It's interesting to read all of the "subjective" posts here. The long and the short of it is a person has to spend some time in Arizona to make a decision on the merits of AZ. Everyone else has their own "story" to tell as a result of their experiences.
Take a vacation for a couple of weeks in Arizona. More if needed. Discover for yourself! |

Is it crowded in AZ? Not really.
Is it crowded on the small freeways? YES! Arizona is stupid when it comes to building freeways, they build towns THEN freeways, it makes no sense. |
