If you watch your actions and mouth, you will have no problems

Not necessarily, The area has a lot of issues they are dealing it and it's getting out of hand quickly. Illegals, gangs, meth, murders, rapes. Yes all cities have crime but Phoenix can't handle the crime. They aren't tough on crime and they are over-worked. They don't even like to arrest people anymore.

I give up. No matter what I say will convince you people that if you simply watch what you do and say and look out for things you wont have a problem with it. Everyone is scared of thier own shadow, and scared that cactus is a serial killer, and scared that little fly in their kitchen will morph into an illegal immigrant hunting for crime. Sayonara, have fun living the rest of your lives paralyzed by fear

Scottie, I hear ya! I have about given up on this forum over the crime kooks.

And it is not just on AZ, it's on all the forums. People mindlessly quote statistical studies without explanation of methodology or any understanding of the mathematics involved. Others toss around viewpoints completely unsupported by any facts. It's a real disservice to folks who come to city-data looking for information. As far as I am concerned the only information that has any validity here is personal experience, as in "I get murdered, raped, beaten up by gang members, shot on the freeway, and walk home (because my car was stolen) to a burglarized house nearly every day in (fill in city name)." Or the more truthful, "I feel generally safe in my neighborhood."

I'll check back with you in another year or so. I liked Phoenix and I'm glad you do too. I can see how it is Paradise compared to where most people come from. I just think the crime is getting out of hand. I never feared for my life when I lived there but I also didn't go to certain areas and look for trouble. I do see a pattern of crime moving to places we didn't have to worry about in the past so just keep a heads up and enjoy the sunshine

I'd rather be in Phoenix than Ohio anyday.

Although crime is mentioned on other forums, it doesn't seem to be as often as it is here. I think that although Phoenix and Arizona is rated quite highly in crime, the bigger problem is that it seems that it can occur anywhere in the metroplitan statistical area from what I have learned, while most other cities don't appear to have this problem.

There is no Valley Fever to worry about and crime is not bad at all, except for some of the student antics at Chico State. The homes are not that expensive as far as CA prices go. Auburn and Grass Valley are very nice and very touristy. Chico is about 4 hours from San Francisco and 1.5 hours n. of Sacramento.
what are the people like in chico?

People in Chico are just about like the people we bump in to everywhere. Mostly very friendly and welcoming, some nut balls mixed in. The business climate is good for starting new business. There is a Newcomers Club there that is a wonderful way to jump into making new friends. There are plenty of art centers to take classes or just take the Art Walk tour and go see the different artist studios. There is an annual Taste of Chico where all the fantastic restaurants and wine vendors and micro breweries offering samples of their foods. Sierra Nevada Brewery is right in Chico. It really is worth checking out. I think the historic downtown section will always be my favorite place during the holidays. The shops are wonderful.

Depends on what field you are in. Enloe is a nice hospital in Chico, but I think they just had a round of layoffs. Feather River hosp in Paradise is solid and I believe Oroville is too. The salary ranges in Chico are low for CA. If you are in architecture then you can expect quite a dog fight for the few jobs there are as there are way too many architects for the population (because it is such a cute artsy little town). My daughters after graduating from Chico State were lucky to find minimum wage jobs but this was 2 1/2 years ago. You can check the job availability on line to see if there is anything in your field. Sacramento is about 1 1/2 hours away for bigger salaries. A lot of people in the tech industry commute to the bay area and stay over during the week.
