You're welcome. Having a fear of driving is a very good thing. You just need to control it. The roads would be sooo much safer if everyone did.

Saw your distress call, lol, and thought to reply. I work as an AZ Realtor. **Please understand I am not soliciting my real estate services** rather I saw your note and I live on the Mesa/Gilbert line and there are various commercial establishments I could walk (say 2 to 3 blocks) to restaurants, supermarkets and even my Bank I bank at. But Belladonna35 is correct with what she said too. Not everything will be within walking distance. Our newspaper at www.azcentral.com will have classified ads.

The reason most people will push you toward Gilbert and Chandler is b/c they're great places to raise kids, and housing is still affordable. I wouldn't raise kids near Mill Ave. That's just me though. I like more of a family feel.

Chandler and Gilbert are wonderful places to raise kids and traffic isn't bad so learning to drive wouldn't be too hard for you around here....not like trying to drive on the Beltway in DC, anyway.

I definitely couldn't live here without a car though, so I'd put that on your priority list. Even if you lived close enough to walk to a Target shopping center, that will get old pretty quickly for you.

What's your price range? There's an area called Ocotillo in Chandler that's very nice and you can easily walk to Safeway shopping center, park, etc., but it's a high end area so houses can be on the pricey side. Also, Lagos Vistoso in Chandler (Riggs and McQueen) is right behind a nice Fye's Marketplace shopping center that you can easily walk to. It's a very nice little gated community with parks, lots of kids, etc. Houses aren't pricey at all - you can get a 2500 sq ft house for mid to high 300's. They have cheaper houses and more expensive houses there too. In Gilbert, Seville Golf and Country Club community is very nice with great parks, great country club, walkabout to Basha's shopping center and very affordable houses. Many subdivisions in the area are walking distance to shopping centers - they build shopping centers on almost every corner here. But you won't want to walk in the summer b/c it's WAY too hot!

You might also consider Verrado, which is in the west valley. They have a Main Street area with a grocery store, coffee shops, etc. - it's really cute. And a rec center too. And you could probably walk/bike there from most areas in Verrado. It's a planned community. Very nice. BUT I wouldn't live there if your husband will be working in the east valley. The commute would be horrid. If he'll be working in the east valley, Gilbert and Chandler would be great options for you.

Good luck.

Boatdrinks is so right about the heat and walking. We could hardly get across the parking lot at WalMart our first summer. I walk a great deal but in the summer I go at 5:30 a.m and 7:30 p.m, jumping over the rattle snakes.
If you can find a community like Vistancia close to your work, then a golf cart would work. We are getting enough shopping at the entrance to our development to keep us happy. The new Safeway is on El Mirage and Vistancia blvd. We will take the walking trail behind the shopping center right up to the back of Safeway. Across the street there is a new fire station and more commercial stores coming. This could work for you. If you like to bike, then there is a new Target super center, Home depot, Lowes and all the other little support shops opening this month. You could easily bike or walk (when cool) down to this center.

You had me curious about this, so I looked it up! It's really more high 300's to high 400's for a house that size. However, with all the talk about Chandler and Gilbert, I may just take a drive down there this weekend.

I lived in the Islands subdivision in Gilbert. There are grocery stores and restaurants within walking distances. Also, in the Islands, you have the lakes and a large community park that is mostly used by non-Islands residents because it is a very nice park and the HOA does not police it well to make sure only Islands residents are using it.

You are also not that far of a drive for nightlife. You can head up to Scottsdale or in to Tempe. All within about 15-20 minutes drive.

Gilbert is a decent place to raise a family.

Good luck in your decision.
