Does anyone have information regarding the continuing business closings and emptying of retailers on the SE corner of Scottsdale Rd and Shea Blvd (behind the gas station)? I heard that Whole Foods is planning to have a market there, but it seems that everyone is clearing out!
I understand that there may be various opinions regarding this topic, but I am asking if anyone has factual information about the changes. Are they planned or is this corner dying as a retail option in the area? Thanks! |

That's a good question! I don't have any factual information, but one guess is high rent? I used to live closer to that area and I never once shopped in that strip mall. To me, there were too many trees that I couldn't see the businesses in there. It's such a busy area that I also didn't have time to glance over either.

I can confirm the new Whole Foods store based on this article:
http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/index.php?sty=83326 The locations seems bizarre, however, given that Whole Foods is already just a few miles west at Shea and Tatum. My guess is that the whole shopping center is going to be torn down and rebuilt and that businesses are moving out as their leases expire. The current configuration would not be suitable for a supermarket and seems like an underutilization of such a high-profile corner. |

The other whole foods at tatum is very busy, so I can see adding another one in deeper into scottsdale. Aren't they building one in north scottsdale somewhere? But I agree with you, Silverbear, you're theory makes more sense.

I checked the Whole Foods web site and it says they are building a new store at Scottsdale Rd. and Mayo (up by the 101 freeway), not down at Shea Blvd.:
http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/stores/newstores.html There is a construction project with a sign confirming Mayo as the location for the new store, so I guess that the news article was misinformed or has not been updated. This leaves me wondering about my original question. Is there anyone who currently works, or who has recently worked in a business located on the SW corner of Scottsdale Rd. and Shea Blvd. who can provide more information on the changes and business closing on this corner? (I said SE corner previously in error. The SW corner used to have a Wild Oats market, a Carvels ice cream shop, and many other business that have left.)Thanks again. |
