Ny Girl Wants To Move To Arizona.
okay i'm just gonna ramble; but i really need some advice on this.
i am a girl who is starting college soon and i have been exepted into university of arizona. if i go, it will mean the start of a lot. first off
please tell me, if you know, if university of arizona is a good school and also what kind of neighborhood is tucson?
after college i really want to move into kingman, arizona. every since i was 14 i fell in love with route 66, i dont know how. my father bought me a coupe de ville and now all i want is to hit the road and ride route 66 for all it's worth. i hate the city. trust me those who live in arizona and all they want is city life; it doesnt get to pretty. yes the shopping is great but if you're like me, who is not as rich as eveyrbody else, its tough. and the crime rates are high in most areas. i feel scared walking the streets.
i really like kingman, after i realized it was on route 66 and researched it i realized its a small little town, not surrounded by many shops, yet not too far off from phoenix or las vegas. I would LOVE to hear more. like; what's the gas prices (im planning to drive my jeep wrangler to arizona) and the house costs and what jobs are available. salary wise as well??
please post the cons and pro's of kingman (its ok be as brutal as you want =), i would very much appreciate it. thank youu all in advance

If you live in Tucson while going to school, you should have plenty of time to explore Kingman and some of the other areas as well. You might also fall in love with Prescott. It is a very charming, old fashioned town. I understand Kingman has a wind that blows most all of the time. The job opportunities may be more fruitful in Tucson and Phoenix rather than in Kingman. The other posters can chime in on apartments in Tucson and Kingman. Good luck to you.

University of Arizona is a good choice. Great school, great campus, great weather (during the school year). The campus is in the older part of town but you can find decent places to live. Probably east of campus would be your best spots as far as neighborhoods go.
As far as Kingman goes, I have the opposite feelings. Not a big fan of the place. I interviewed for a job there once and didn't like it there. Unless things have changed a lot, route 66 has a bunch of flea bag hotels on it and not much else.
I haven't been to Kingman in a long time but just drove through Winslow and Holbrooke and they were as dumpy as I recall.
On the other hand Flagstaff is great, and if you don't mind the winter weather, NAU is a nice school (much smaller than UA or ASU)

my husband is looking to go to the UOFA, is applying for med school. We are from NY also, but from Long Island. WEnt to Tucson and fell in love with it and the school is a beauty. Wait till you see the Mountains, beautiful. What are you going to school for? You said you were excepted to do what? The apartments are very reasonable there not like where we live a one bedroom on LI. is 1000 dollars a month. The last I looked around the campus area the apartments were as cheap as 400 per month now thats a deal. good luck with everything fellow nyer.

Driven through there on the way to Vegas. Why anyone would want to live there is beyond me.

U of A...
You'll have to pardon my rambling and such...I'm holding my baby and trying to type at the same time...not easy!
I went to the U of A and in my personal experience, I was very disappointed. I was going thousands of dollars into student loan debt, since I am not as rich as most of the students there who get by on their parent's money and credit cards, and I expected a quality education for it. However, I was appalled when most of my classes were taught by students or teachers assistants that had no idea what they were doing, as most of them were still undergrads and more concerned with the social aspect than the education part we were supposed to be there for. I also was a journalism major before I was pretty much forced to switch to a different major due to my counselor for that department.(He ultimately made all the decisions for the students in his department...if they were to go on or not) He informed me that I would "never make it" unless I got by on my looks because that was all that mattered. Even though i was acing all of my journalism classes and had the talent, drive, and passion for it, he only focused on my physical appearance and made crude comments about how he was attracted to me and how I would have to sleep with everyone to get to the top because that was what`was expected of an attractive girl in that line of work. Of course I reported it and got nowhere because the school would rather protect him. I immediately switched to an English major and found that my English teachers were either old hippie potheads who encouraged the class to use marijuana or just plain odd. One teacher constantly reminded our class that he was a gay Jewish man from New York and how hard it was. Not only that, but he had us base all of our assignments on his favorite movie...Star Wars and a semi-pornagraphic film about two gay lovers. I learned absolutely nothing. This was pretty much prevolent in all my classes. I think I only had one actual professor in all my classes. Maybe it was just bad luck, but I ended up switching to a local community college, payed a lot less, and got a much better education with REAL professors. I am not the only one who felt this way. I knew quite a few people, including my SIL who felt the same way after attending. It's a pretty nice campus, most of the dorms are nice, and plenty of shops and restaurants right on campus. If you plan on living off campus and commuting with your own car, parking is very expensive and cars are always getting vandalized so you have to be very cautious. An alarm system would be wise. I know of one off campus apartment complex that I actually lived in that provides a shuttle to and from campus so you don't have to hassle with the drive and parking and the traffic. The apartments go up to 4 Bd/Rms and with 3 roommates, I was paying $280 a month. The only thing we had to pay for besides rent was electricity. They provide water, sewer, phone and cable. You get the full cable lineup. Very modern apartments, newer appliances, decent sized rooms and bathrooms. The rooms come with a bedframe and mattress and desk/chair in them. They are all furnished. Pretty cheap. Unless you know anybody else going to the U of A that would be willing to room with you, they usually just place you with random people...all students. It's a student complex. It's very nice, great security and amenities. Huge resort style pool, tanning bed, and nice exercise room. There's even a little theater room. It's called Reserve at Star Pass. There are lots of other apartments but I found this one to be the safest and most convenient...and the nicest as far as cleanliness and people go. As far as the on-campus housing (the rental houses)it's a pretty crappy area. Lots of crime, bums and very run down houses that have been used and trashed to the extreme. There's one area that is pretty nice down University Blvd. but it is very expensive and it seems that no students actually live there, either seniors or young couples. The dorms are great and the walk to and from buildings is not bad at all. I had a great time at the U of A socially...made lots of friends, went to lots of cool parties, met a lot of cute boys....but educationally speaking, I didn't get much from it. But good luck with your classes, hopefully you have better luck than I did. Maybe they have changed all that by now...hopefully.
