Because our air is dry most of the time, people with tendencies to have allergies will notice it more. My allergists, and I've been to 5, all say the same thing; that you can have allergy problems anywhere in the country. People are allergic to different pollens in every state. And one of the biggest allergy problem causers is cigarette smoke.

Default visit first

I am thinking of moving my family away from Arizona due to a few things but allergies is one reason, along with the 6 month Summers, the over population, the low income, and the bad school reputations. I don't want to discourage you though. I have lived here most of my life. It is time for change, just like it is for you I suppose. Tucson is o.k. it does get hot there though, like 105-110 at times, but it seems to get good monsoons and cooler winters, even with some snowfall every once in awhile. I live in Phx now, and hate it. The dry air and dust kills me in the spring and in the monsoon season ( fall). Sedona is nice, but here's kind of a rule with Arizona, the more north you go, the more expensive it gets ( for the most part). I would recommend Prescott, Flag, or even the white mountain areas like Showlow, etc.. The desert is tough in the summers and the dust is a killer.
Best of Luck.

Default Arizona Allergies

If you are moving to AZ to avoid seasonal allergies, think twice. My advice is to rent for a few years before you buy to see how you are affected.

I moved to Scottsdale at the age of 55. I never had a problem with allergies for those first 55 years, whcih were sopent living in the midwest, Texas, England, and Germany. After three years in AZ allergies hit me like a TON OF BRICKS [my doctor said "three years is usual"].

They are controllable with medication, but I now need to take many: Allegra [replaced Zyrtec whcih initially worked like magic but then last year didn't work], Singulair, Nasonex, and Special Eye drops [without which the eyes itch so badly uou almost want to just gouge them out]. It is a real pain. Every year it starts earlier - this year it was January - and it doesn't end until there is a week of 105 degree weather.

Our Scottsdale home is at 1900 feet. We also have a home in Pinetop, in the White Mountains, at 7400 feet. I get no relief up there.

I've lived all over the world (and all over Arizona) and found that Flagstaff was one of the few places where I had no allergy problems. Affording Flagstaff is another story.
