Thanks so much for the places to go, Jada. Remember I still have my Winnebago in storage and plan on taking off for the summer once it gets hot. With the space rent paid (for the trailer), I can still have a home to return to. I remember my days in Palm Springs when summer just seemed to go on and on and on, but not this year. I'm getting out of the desert in the summer, and will probably use my New Mexico State Park camping pass. They have wonderful parks throughout the state, where I'll be above 5000 feet all summer.
But, last year I was in Truth or Consequences, NM, all winter, which has NOTHING to do, so when you said "Barnes and Noble" AND 'coffee shops', my eyes lit up !!
Guess it's all relative, eh?

I have always wondered what is wrong with the air here. I have mysteriously seen dead birds show up at the apartment complex I used to live in. It was like they just fell from the air and died. It didn't look like they were hurt before they died. I wonder if the farmers are using illegal pesticides because I know there is something seriously wrong with the air here. I was in Phoenix today and it was what they call a high pollution day. My asthma still wasn't as bad there as it is in Yuma. Here in Yuma my asthma has actually gotten so bad that I have had trouble walking. Then I have actually had convulsions from an extreme lack of oxygen. I have never had this problem anywhere else.

wow that reminds me, when we first moved here we lived out in the foothills and i was driving home, all of a sudden there was a dove flying right in front of us and just dropped dead right out of the sky. i was shocked! i stopped and got out and looked at it, nothing was wrong with it, it just died. strange. yeah i cant jog outside, i tried to but i just cant take it.

http://www.city-data.com/forum/arizo...love-yuma.html <--- my thread I just made the other day...

I highly recommend taking trips to see the rest of AZ. There are a lot of cute towns all over the place with gorgeous scenery that help me to appreciate AZ. I am lucky enough to work 4 10's and have 3 days to play every weekend!

AZ is quite different than KY. I know all the neg stuff on here is not what you want to hear and I'm sure you'll be looking for everything neg when you finally move. My advice is to look past that and find the positive! There are a lot of good thing Yuma and AZ have to offer, you won't see it with smoke in your eyes! If you find a place to live out of town, like the foothills, don't stay there all the time, make trips into town to change the scenery a bit, I think the foothills is boring.

It is hot here in the summers, you won't like it. but San Diego is quite a bit cooler and so is Julian, CA and all those little towns up near Palomar in CA. You can also escape to the towns just north of Phoenix like Prescott. A few days of cool weather every now and then will definitely help you survive the heat! Believe me, I've been in AZ for 10 years, it's the only way.

there are a ton of good places to eat in town! You just gotta be willing to look for them and not afraid to walk into a hole in the wall joint. I was kinda sad at first at the lack of "things to do" around here until I went ot Lute's Casino downtown (not a casino but a bar/restaurant). I saw a bunch of old guys playing dominos, people meeting for blind dates, bunch of friends hanging out, couples having a night out, and family get-togethers! Yuma really is a happening place, you just gotta open your eyes!

there is also a lot of festivals to go too! I went to the Tamale festival and am planning on the lettuce festival! I was going to go to the old towm jubilee last weekend but I got sick

the locals that I have had a chance to talk to have been real nice, although I haven't ever run into jaada, so.... j/k! haha I'm sure you are nice, I did share your thoughts about arizona until I moved down here from PHX and opened my eyes! If you look at it differently you might see what I see.

Phoenix and Sand Diego are 3 hours away, so it's not that convenient but right now gas is still at $1.80, which is cheap compared to the $4+ we were paying awhile ago! So at least going there for the weekend isn't such a burden on the wallet these days. Sometimes it nice to feel a big city and get some things at the stores you can't here.

good luck!

I don't like Yuma either. I am a nice person though. I too have had a tough time since moving here. The air here is terribly difficult on my lungs. I did find out that the military does test fire weapons using depleted uranium. Maybe that has something to deal with it. I spent last Sunday night in the emergency room because my asthma got so bad. Spending time in the er and having constant asthma attacks definitely is not my cup of tea. I was normally a very active person prior to moving here. Now I am confined to my apartment because I can't be outside.

haha well I'm guessing you had no choice in the matter in coming here, but seriously see about finding a way out. It's not for everyone, I did hate it just as much as you did but when I got this job I spent a few weekends here trying to see only the good things and compare the bad with PHX. I know all the bad stuff, I read all your posts haha. At least it's better than PHX, I think so anyways. Believe me, if your neg all the time about it, it's just more stress and ulcers and just not worth it. I'm tired of being cranky and b*tching about where I live all the time.

I learned a lot about AZ getting my degree at ASU in geography. They used to send all the respiratory illness patients here because of the clean arid air.... but then tourists and old people kept bringing in their native plants to make their yards pretty and now we have the worst allergies ever! Then you add pollution to that and we're screwed

That's all WW2 stuff in the soils, there were no safety rules or organization back then. They just fired at whatever they felt like that day and they didn't know harmful effects back then either. Don't blame the military today, they are trying to clean up the past mistakes as best they can. All the testing today is very contained and everything is documented, believe me, I know, I work there.

I heard about some soldiers who developed cancer that worked on the base. I know it is probably from the uranium they are using. I have also heard that there is a cancer cluster close by. I know at the schools I worked at, I had not one but several coworkers and there was also a student who was diagnosed with cancer. I also read about the number of lupus cases being unusually high. I know several people who have lupus here.

I actually have to use a nebulizer for my asthma and can hardly stand it so I have to look for a way out of here. In the midwest and other places I hardly used my inhaler. The nebulizer makes my heart beat so fast I just can't stand it. I don't think I have been able to sleep well all week since I have started using nebulizer treatments.
