Positive post re: Yuma, Arizona
Hi! Welcome to Yuma! I have lived in Yuma 10 years and found it to be a pleasant city to raise my children. I had both children in private schools for from 2000 until 2008 (Southwestern Christian School). In 2008/2009 we moved to public school in the neighborhood...and could not be happier with the quality of the teachers and school involvement of the parents in both public schools (Crane District: Pueblo Elementary & Centennial Jr High)
My neighborhood is quiet and safe. A city task force which works to eradicate any graffiti found in the city within 48 hours, and a curfew for teens every night which is strictly enforced.
I assure you that we attract physicians to this community hospital who are qualified to work anywhere in the country, and in fact we compete at the national level for physicians because of the quality of the hospital facility.
I dont have any need to go to Mexico...and having lived in Texas, Yuma is not a 'typical border town' at all. There is a higher percentage of law enforcement in this city due to the presence of the border patrol...and I've yet to see my neighborhood overrun with "illegal aliens".
I worked as a social worker in larger cities in Texas...yet had to ask specifically to locate the HUD/low income housing in Yuma because most of the complexes are much nicer than any I've seen --and worked in-- in other cities.
As for the heat...well, we are in southwest Arizona...what do you expect? Its hot on the east coast when its 80 degrees with 80% humidity...of course its going to be hot in Arizona. That is why I work in an air conditioned office, drive an air conditioned car, and have an air conditioned home.
I dont miss ice storms and blackouts due to weather..I dont have to shovel sunshine. Talk to me in January & February about school snow days in the rest of the country or having to live off generators to keep from freezing to death...doesn't happen in so. Arizona. My kids play outdoors all winter long with little more than a sweater.
I dont lack for things to do...and I'm not a snowbird by more than two decades. I am active in the community, stay in touch with the local parks and recreation programs (which are excellent) and my local church, along with other volunteer outlets..of which there are many. Home improvements and self improvements are additional activities which take up my 'free time'...whatever is left after shuttling my children to all their activities.
Having grown up with a father in the Air Force, I moved throughout my life and learned to 'bloom where planted'.
I moved to Yuma by choice, and by choice I remain here.
Welcome!

Can anyone give me some good advice on this area? What neighborhoods are good to live in, where are good places to go, eat, shop, etc. Also what about Mexico? Are there any places there nearby you recommend? Also, I am a nurse, what hospitals would you recommend working in? We are both from KY originally, so we are both used to all 4 seasons...it will be different in AZ I am sure! We are excited and optimistic about our move. Thanks. Anything you can tell me would be wonderful! Thanks!

I posted a couple of months ago asking for info. Just want to say, I bought the trailer I found online and moved to Yuma in January, and so far, I love it! Yes, I'm now in one of those snowbird parks, even though I'm not 'age qualified' (55+), but I'm enjoying the seniors anyway, and I have an RV in NM to escape the heat for a few months. I checked out "Crazy Earls" and thank you for the suggestion. I've been 'settling in' more than going out, but Yuma seems much better than expected so far. Have to catch that coffee shop you mentioned too. Thanks everyone!
Oh one more thing: the jets and planes? I must be far enough away cuz they're no problem. ...but the TRAINS! Oh my God, do they ever stop????

the longer I'm here, the more I like it
Pleasantly surprised with how much I'm enjoying the new Yuma, now that it's bigger. I find people personable, not all braindead like some places I've lived, can carry on conversations without their phones of texts consuming every minute. Not everyone, just a random sample of people I've met.
And the area, lots of variety in areas of the city, haven't seen anything horrible, people seem mid class and treat each other as equals.
I like it. I'm in between ages, not young, but not a senior, which usually makes it lonely, but I haven't noticed that here.
Oh, I gotta check out the "Mine Shaft", I hear they have a pool!! How cool is that!

I will try Sand and Sage, thanks. But, re pool @ Mine Shaft: I've asked several people if people actually go in the pool, and they said Yeah! So, it's on my list!

your post caught my attention seeing Ky mentioned, I don't know much about Yuma, except that its hotter then Phoenix and thats hard to believe anywhere could be hotter. Its going to be rough, unless you are a complete sun lover and like extream heat. The dust, heat, dryness and lack of green and water gets really old, your sinuses will be dry you will have nose bleeds, you will never be able to keep your home clean, when you walk outside your home all summer which is a good 5 months, you will want to seek cover, its uncomfortable just to stand in the heat for a few minutes, I feel like I am doing time living out here and would jump up and start packing soon as I get the green light its time to return A couple years won't be to bad, but I am willing to bet you will be ready to go when your time is done there.
