what kind of health problems does your husband have that you think Arizona would be a better place to live? some people with joint problems find it worse here with the dryness, humidity in the air would be better for those type problems I suppose. Do you find sand, cactus, and brown landscapes beautiful? I just really miss the green and color back home. The sky is the bluest out here you will ever see, Arizona does have that goiing for it, but I find I have allergys due to the dust a little more then I ever did back in KY. Some people find differen't landscapes beautiful and you know if you have been attracted to this landscape, then you will know if you would love it here. For me, its just a place Id like to visit now and then, I am just not so much a sun lover these days

My husband has rheumatoid arthritis and cirrhosis When he first got sick the doc gave him 2 wks then 6 months to live Its been nearly 4 yrs now so no one knows how long hes got Only God can tell
We visited my daughter last year in Fl I thought that might help his health but the humidity, wet weather got to him Doc said he needs warm weather ,so we thought we might try a warm dry climate

We are both originally from N.C. We both grew up in a small town My husband however worked in Chicago awhile Long story short ,we have lived her in Ky for 15 yrs now and we have both seen our share of very cold Winters with snow ,ice storms and such and are ready for a change .

and tornadoes are not something you are likely to see either. I really like that, that type of weather use to scare me. I don't want to discourage you from the Arizona heat, as that might not be a problem for you, you can always give it a try out here.

Default Advise to take or leave

OK, it's been 5 months since the last post.....is anything better?
I was offered a well paying position almost 100K to go there. I have a Jr in HS, and a wife. It looks like that kind of money could buy a kingdom in Yuma - but is it worth the downfalls.

Oppinions?
Thanks

Well, I'll tell ya, I'm a desert lover, so keep that in mind.
The ideal thing would be if you can get out of Yuma for the summer, but that's tough with your work and family. If possible, you can set aside a nest egg to rent something around San Diego, which is 175 miles away, for the family to escape to often. Prices are exhorbitant there, but it would be worth it.
The longer I'm here, the more I like Yuma, especially the people! Very down to earth, friendly, interesting, and working a variety of jobs. When I lived in Palm Springs years ago, everyone worked in the hospitality industry (hotels. bars, restaurants, etc), which got boring after awhile.
For alot of people, they enjoy summer just because the snowbirds are gone, and the prices go down. But, I'm not up for long hot summers anymore, and will take off in June till Sept, ..because I finally CAN, not like when I lived in Palm Springs.
I've only been here since Jan, so that's about all I can offer.
The longer I'm here, the more I like it!
Use your money to get away during the hot months, and you might like it as much as me. I'm mean you CANNOT beat the weather in the winter, and Yuma has just about everything you need in terms of stores, services, etc. Nice mall, 3 Walmarts, Lowes, Home Depot, restaurants, bars, and their signs say "continuing to build an inclusive community"!

Smile Moving to Yuma in July 2009

Hi. I currently live in Galveston, TX and am fixing to move to Yuma in July. I've read the thread and the first part is very discouraging, reading about the spiders and scorpions and all negative things about yuma. Nice comments pop up every once in a while and i'd like to focus on those more since i will be living in Yuma for at least 3 years. If i like it there then i will probably stay.

I was there for two days in December 2008 to check the place out and i didn't think it was that bad. But of course that was in the winter. My job will be in Wellton but i plan to live in Yuma. I have been checking out houses for sale but have decided on renting for a few months first to get a feel of the place. Any suggestions for a place? How has the economy affected house prices over there?

I'm a single male and don't have family or friends in Yuma (i don't think my employer counts) ;P. I'm really hoping that people would be nice and friendly. I think i will need friends.

Yuma is the most 'bug-free' place I've ever lived. Since January, I've not encountered any scorpions, tarantulas, snakes, etc. I rarely did in ANY of the desert cities I've lived in. I leave my doors open with no flies or anything.
I think the people here are extremely friendly, down to earth, and easy to get to know. I'm leaving for the summer, but will be back in Sept. I'm a single female, and would be happy to be a friend when I get back. I've already met some really great people. It was just what I needed too.

Stay away from Regency Square. Those apartments are very noisy and small. I had a neighbor there whose TV and stereo were so loud that I could feel my walls vibrating. A friend of mine used to hear her neighbors having sex. Hayden Square is probably one of the better complexes. I would stay away from Beach Club because it is in a bad neighborhood.
