Can anyone give me some insite on the Mesa, Tempe area?

My job will possibily be moving me there within a month. The job is located in Mesa zip code 85201

I am African American, laid back, not really into clubs, but i love live music like jazz. I wouldn't mind every now and again hanging out. I am 36, look 26, male. athletic...so if there are any softball teams out there let me know. Love going to the movies, reading, bike riding, walking & minor shopping, pretty much a home body, But don't want the area to be too boring. can anyone help a brother out?????????

Given the choice between Tempe and Mesa and your description of your interests, I would recommend Tempe. It's younger in feel, more politically moderate, and more lively than Mesa. It's also closer to Central Phoenix, which is where you're most likely to find live jazz.

SOFTBALL??? There are plenty of leagues, but have you considered the real thing--baseball? There is a good league here that's also in St.L: the MSBL. I pitched in it for 18 years until my shoulder was destroyed. The MSBL goes year round with a Nat'l tournament here in the fall.

You might also want to look into Gilbert. It's between Mesa and Tempe. For a single guy it may be too boring, but I mention it because of the parks, Freestone Park in particular. Silverbear is correct about Tempe for nightlife. It's a college town and Mill Ave is a hot spot.

I wish I could help you with the Jazz club angle. There used to be a great little blues club in SE Scottsdale years ago. Unfortunately the place is long gone.
