No 5PM traffic???? Where have you been for the past 2 months? It's not as bad as a couple years ago, because the snowbirds haven't been here in the droves they usually come in, but it's still bad. Not as bad as Phoenix or San Diego, but still slows traffic flow quite a bit. I happen to live off Araby road (Exit 7) & work down the hill from the hospital on 24th street. It takes me 30 minutes to travel 9 miles at this time of year - depending on how many snowbirds are out that early/late. In the summer it takes me 15 minutes.

I'm not complaining, just clarifying what someone else had posted. If you are used to the Interstate moving at 10mph, then it's not bad. If your used to moving along at a steady pace, it's bad. It's all in the perspective.

I happen to like it here, no skeeters in my area even with a pool, but that may be due to the farmland just north of me. And it's quiet here, few cars racing by as we live near the end of the street. That & it's a Law Enforcement neighborhood.

Here's my backyard view, looking north.............

West of it off Araby.

I'm wondering when they are going to let the 24th St & Araby intersection be controlled by the sensors they put in when they fixed the damn street (finished the paving almost 6 months ago). I try to avoid it, but if I take 24th into work, then I have to deal with Ave 3E, where it goes over the railroad tracks. All those semi trucks trying to go to the Marine Base & every one of them crowding the left hand lane.

Ave 3E needs widened to 6 lanes like 32nd street is. 2 lanes can't handle the traffic, it's constantly backed up about a mile. So I try to avoid it unless I'm going to work at 3AM. Then it isn't so bad.

Law Enforcement lives in my neighborhood, as do lots of Marine officers. I have 6 LEO's on my street alone, the County Sheriff lives 3 houses away, Chief Detention Center Capt lives a mile away, 4 State Patrolmen, and 12 Marine officers with their families live here. Have had an intruder in the house once, but a .45 1911 in the face backed em right off.

I didn't see it, but read about it in the online version of the paper.

The biggest problem with traffic, is the slower traffic seems to think they need to stay in the left lane. I stay there, but then I'm usually moving faster than the right lane. Then you get someone driving 35 in a 55 zone & not paying attention. A person really has to watch them, because if they look in their rear view mirror, they often slam on the brakes, because they didn't know you were there.

Driving (anywhere) imagine yourself on a motorcycle that's invisible. Anticipate everyone & give yourself lots of room to slow down or have an escape route - i.e. change lanes, use the turning lane, use the shoulder, use your ABS system built into the vehicle. People don't pay attention to what's around them much when driving in a fully enclosed vehicle, but if you imagine being alone out in the breeze, you learn quickly that they don't see you. Anticipation of the driver going to move into your lane/pull out in front of you/slam on the brakes/go from far right to the left turn lane........all these things can & should be anticipated.

Stay safe out there.

BTW, I learned to drive on the farm in Nebraska, had a motorcycle when I was 15 & learned then how to anticipate trouble on the road. I've never been run into, or hit anyone. I have backed over a couple cars in my 4x4, but they pulled up into my blind spot & I couldn't see them until I got out of the truck.

The anticipation thing is good advise for anyone, not just Yuma drivers. Anticipation may keep you alive some day if used every time you get into a vehicle.

lol traffic? um like what? a mile, maybe 2 of a little slowing b/c of a light? I drive from YPG to the middle of town every day (25mi commute) around 5pm and in the mornings at 6am. I have rarely gone less than 45mph on the 95 in both directions!! and that's one lane for like 15miles with over 1200 people going to the same place at the same time with all the snowbirds and trucks!

most old people are really nice. If you walk around walmart with a "i hate all snowbirds" attitude, they will pick up on it and be mean. I do know of a few crabs and I know they can get nasty (I lived in Boca Raton, FL for a few years) and yes they drive horrible. but really, if you drive the speed limit or close to it, and really keep an eye out (i ride a motorcycle too Mark), you should have no issues. You can spot the snowbirds miles away. Even the mexicans drive slow too! There are a few people with massive wedgies that don't have the patience to drive the speed limit and pass people like crazy while swearing at them, those are the people that are really dangerous in my opinion.

Seriously, it's all about your attitude and your actions that will determine how great or bad of a place you live in. It doesn't matter if you are in paradise or hell, you will never be happy if you got a poor attitude. Trust me, I've been in AZ long enough. I hated Phoenix so bad I was ready to quit my job, file bankruptcy and live with my parents in Cali. But I got this job and realized I've been living wrong! I see the good that yuma has to offer, and yes I see the bad things too, but I just choose not to get an ulcer over it!
