AZ Unemployment Insurance and the "Independent contracor" sales positions.
I recently became unemployed, and filed my claim with AZUI. I am searching hard for jobs, and most of what I am finding is sales positions which are all “independent contractor” classified, and require a person to fill out a W9, and be issued a 1099 regarding income earned. That’s all well and good, but does filling out a W9 disqualify me from receiving benefits just in itself? These companies can get by without spending a nickel unless a sale is made. Conceivably a company could keep recruiting new sales people that cannot make a living but only make occaisional sales. It all adds up for them, but does it disqualify each sales person from receiving benefits he would otherwise be eligible for? Basically, “a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush” so taking any position that is of “independent contractor” status is like giving up the bird in the hand in hopes he can get 2 in the bush, but what if he can’t make sales because of a dying economy? Does the simple act of signing a W9 disqualify a person from UI benefits regardless of whether or not he makes any money trying to sell? Thanks for your response.
