Default How does unemployment in AZ work for new residents?

I haven't lost my job, but I'm in fear of it. My job sent me here last March. So I haven't even been here a year and figure, if I lose my job, I won't get much unemployment help at all. Can I still file in VA, where I was a resident for 13 yrs., in AZ or in both states?

If you are afraid of losing your job, start looking for another one NOW. Unemployment checks are very low here. I think you only get like 240 dollars per week. You would probably even make more money waiting tables than taking unemployment in AZ. I am not sure if you can file in Virginia or not.

I've been looking for another job. I'm not gonna wait until the rug gets yanked out from under me. Just curious how it works here if it comes to that.

yumadons is on a distinguished road
$240 a week is definitely the max here in AZ. You'd probably be better off filing in VA.

If you read over the rules, it looks like you have to have worked here a year to have a "base period". As pointed out, it would be to your great advantage if you were eligible to get benefits from another state. AZ leads only Mississippi, I believe, in the level of unemployment benefits paid.

I guess I need to post in the VA forum to see if I'm still eligible to file there. I changed my residency in June, so I'll be filing 2008 taxes in both states as a partial year resident for 2008.
