You should contract with a pest control service. Ours costs us $30/month, and is worth every nickel. Nothing moves in our house, that's not supposed to. They spray outdoors as well.

I would take a look at your bathroom vanitys front lower lip and see if it is open. they tend to come in if the plumbing holes were not sealed correctly and or the vents below the stuco walls and up and around the opening on some cabinets.
Also check the door seals on the bottom of all doors.
Have 2 dogs and never use pest control and no problems with scorpions or roaches.

I had a third roach on the wall behind the toilet last night/this morning. I do have pest control service here (in fact, they seem to really come in after the outside has been sprayed) but I think I've determined where they're making it in. The toilet is not secured properly and I saw a spider crawl from under there once so I'm guessing they're following the exterior of the waste pipe into the house. In the meantime, as of last night I have boric acid sprinkled around the base. Hope to have the toilet and wax ring replaced shortly and then I'm going to stuff the space with steel wool and caulk which hopefully will keep 'em out....or I'll blow this place up!

The hardware stores sell a small tube of caulking for the base of the commode. You can spread it into the gap at the base where it meets the floor. Fill a small bucket with water use a sponge and smooth it out.

Well, had another HUGE black one (could've saddled that bastard!) and a smaller reddish one in the bathroom again the other day. The black one was alive but on his back and the red one was near the vanity running around. These things seem to enter in groups.
I watched that one go under the vanity so I got down and looked under there as the kick panel is off and could see a gap at the base of the wall.
I can NOW only assume that they're following the pipe over to the sink area, as you mentioned. Powdered all that area now and sprayed.
I hope that I'm not sending them further through the house via the walls by cutting off their exits?
Also went outside last week and found that there were gaps in the exterior wall at the water meter, at the telephone lines and a couple other areas which I promptly sealed with caulk.
I'm thinking the sewer pipe needs to be sealed around it at the outside and since I'll have a bobcat on the weekend, perhaps I should have it done then.
Anyone have a recommendation for a good plumber out here?
Wherabouts in town are you living, Rambush? I think I'll mover there!

well I wanted to send u a private message but u don't seem to have that set up. check the directory under P for Parson's then add plumbing after it.
It was great you checked and discovered I had hit the nail on the head under the vanity access. So how does the sewer pipe come in? through the wall? or is there a big divot under the sink where they broke through the slab and left a dirt hole? if its a dirt hole which is common under bathtubs to have enough clearance for the trap then you can use a mix of plaster of paris and portland cement keeping it wet then coat the dirt with the mix after it sets up a tad to hold together. this will keep all the critters from coming in that direction if you are swapping out a tub.

That's odd, I should be able to receive private messages, I haven't had a problem before? I'll look into it.
I appreciate the plumber recommendation.
There's no visible signs of where the pipes comes in or any dirt holes but the bathroom sinks are piped within the wall. I hadn't had any plans to yank the tub but I sure as hell will if it stops this!
I was talking to my cousin who's a builder in Chicago about this and he mentioned the under the bathtub thing as well. He also suggested that perhaps they're entering in through the attic and following the pipes down.
I don't know where they're coming from but I had a huge spider on the wall this morning and I can only assume it came through the attic and then out a vent. Anyone in the market for a nice house in a nice neighborhood...for cheap?

User, you'll never keep bugs out of your house. Like I've mentioned in the past, you should subscribe to a good pest control service. We use Baron's. While it won't completely eliminate bugs, when you do see them, they'll be half-dead. They're a lot easier to catch when their on their backs.

Oh you are so bad, you own stock in that company don't you!
I think a cat would be cheaper though.

I do have pest control, Blue Moon. I'm all for them dying on their backs but I want to minimize their opportunity to get inside and climb around in my walls.
Pest control can deter them from exiting their usual exits which is now largely contained in the master bedroom and bath and it can send them further into the walls of the rest of the home in search of safer passage.
They also damage drywall by chewing through it so they need to be kept out in the first place. And they eat paper and I have lots of books which I will not be spraying with insecticide.
A couple small bugs here and there is normal and I can accept that. But big black roaches that you can ride on, I can not nor can I accept the daily sighting of red roaches.
I came back here to check on the name of the plumber as I don't see them in the phone book.
