Minus Alaska (which is a given), its in the Top 3. Brrrrrrrrr. Its amazing how Phoenix is the hottest major city in the USA, and Flagstaff almost the coldest.

Steve-o,
I also find that quite interesting.

Probably the same for Mt Whitney and Death Valley in CA.

It is very interesting. Its all about the elevation. Drive Rt.17 from Phoenix to Flagstaff sometime, its an uphill battle the whole way. I believe Flagstaff is 7,000 ft higher than PHX. Coming down from Flagstaff to PHX is an interesting experience. Your ears pop every few seconds, and the temps rise every minute it seems. LOL

Stev-o,
Yep your right it's elevation.
Flagstaff 7,000 ft
Phoenix 1200 ft
Mt Whitney 14496 ft
Death Valley-282 ft

Traveled I17 from Phoenix to Flagstaff many times. Even did it before there was a I17.

Steve-o,
To add, check out the distances between the places.

Flagstaff to Phoenix 146 mi approx.
Mt Whitney to Death Valley 80 mi approx.

Interesting.

Thumbs down Where does the Spokane transplant work?

I'd like to know where the Spokane transplant works. I grew up in Spokane and went to college there earning a a BA in Business and then an MBA and there are simply no Fortune 500 companies up there to work for (except for Kaiser Aluminum). It is mostly a blue-collar town with low hourly wages and my 25 plus winters up will tell anyone it is very gray and overcast and cold from November to March (and sometimes April). The ave. Southwestern Area person moving up to Spokane or Coeur d Alene, Idaho lasts two years before the long, dark, and dreary winters finally get to them. I grew up skiing at Schweitzer and 49 Degrees North and Silver Mountain and they are all just low elevation , small ski areas that get a lot of fog, ice, and some years very little snow. A good job up there for most people means working at Costco or Fred Meyers for $10/hour.

It always makes me laugh - the people on this forum who visit a place and then somehow have an opinion about living there. Visiting Flagstaff and living here are very different.
