Was undecided bet' AZ and NV but not any more
My friend's dog was snatched away yesterday by a coyote right in front of her eyes while she was just standing around visiting with friends and their dogs. I don't think I can even think about moving to Scotsdale or anywhere in AZ any more and putting my dog in harm's way.

Wow you are guys are harsh!
I'm sorry that happened to your friend's dog, that's just terrible. I can understand why you would reconsider moving here. You do have to be extra careful with coyotes. I may have heard a cat get killed by one last night. I wanted to come on here and start a thread about having your cats out- don't do it! We do have coyotes around our neighborhood.

Last time I checked, there are coyotes in NV also. I heard a pack 2 nights ago here so take CO off your list. When we lived in AZ, we saw and heard coyotes alot. Even had one trail behind my dog and I during a run. Dog was in heat so he may have had ulterior motives . The smart dogs and cats would live a long time. The not so wise ones would become a link in the food chain. If you have a fenced yard, it will help.

I'm sorry if my post seemed insensitive. Seriously, I'm sorry about what happened to the dog.
However, it does seem a bit over the top to make a decision based on where you are going to live based on that. There is danger of some kind no matter where you live. And when you choose to live in the desert, coyotes are one of them. It's not like they are out there on every street corner killing every pet that comes outside-- but you do have to be aware.
But, are you not aware that Nevada is also a desert state? There are just as many coyotes in Nevada as Arizona! So, the philosphy behind it is a little ridiculous. If you don't think there are coyotes in Nevada, google it.

There are coyotes EVERYWHERE, not just the west. Ive had massive packs of them in my backyard (15-20) on several occasions.

lauyeung: so sorry to hear what happened to that dog! Unfortunately, it does happen. As for the posts that followed yours, they were so incredibly rude and insensitive. You don't need to hear that and I'm sure don't appreciate the sarcasm. As you can see, there are plenty of rude people here, so maybe you are better off not moving here.

Just don't live up there in the desert area. If you move to NV and live in a deserty area it's the samething. Move to a regular neighborhood.

I'm sorry about your friend's dog but I have to agree with the others - if you're basing your decision on that experience alone, you might want to consider adding a few additional criteria to your list of reasons to move, or not move, somewhere. Vegas has it's own list of problems to deal with....
Best of luck wherever you chose to move.

Sorry about what happened to your friend's dog, but I must admit there's a part of me that loves coyotes, raccoons, crows and other animals which refuse to just run away and disappear in response to the human invasion of their territory...
I agree with those who say that the answer to your problem is just to move into a city, stay away from the wilderness. If you choose to live on the outskirts of any southwestern city you are exposing yourself to 'yotes, snakes, scorpions and other critters (not to mention wildfires).
In other words, you pay a price for the beautiful view.

Sorry for the harsh responses. We are just irrated with this area too. Dogs are in danger anywhere in the US. I take it this happened in Scottsdale. Yes there are lots of Coyotes there - anywhere near the mountains. Sorry bout the dog, just keep your dog leashed and supervised at all times.
