Payson?
I was looking online at Payson. Is it easy to get to from Scottsdale? I bet it is a nice getaway from the high heat in the summer?

It is very easy to get to, about an hour and yes it's great to escape to in the summer! I wish we had a cabin up there!

I just drove Hwy. 87--it is an amazing drive! (And it seemed to go really quickly--emphasis on "seemed," I wasn't keeping track!)

Commuting from Phoenix to Payson is not an easy commute. You are dealing with twisting, mountain roads that take its toll on the driver and vehicle.

The commute is better than the older days and possibly no worse than the commuters that live in Prescott Valley areas and come in on I-17

I still can't imagine making that drive (or from Prescott Valley to Phoenix) EVERY day. Way too much of life spent in the car. Especially in winter months, with the short days... you really would feel like you spent your ENTIRE day going to and from, and at, work. I did that years ago just commuting in a car pool from Casa Grande to Florence (a much shorter distance). The winters were the worst.

it's been a popular summer getaway for Phoenicians for decades...can't tell if your post indicates you're going to commute, but the Payson drive is now much safer with the recent (three years ago??) completion of four-lane divided highway all the way from the Phx area....it's still a hilly affair with curves and all that!
