SMall community - can you be more specific?
GIlbert feels and looks small town - great place, especially in the older neighborhoods closer to Baseline and the 60 - VAl Vista area

Very offended by this comment. I was born and raised in Ajo and am a hispanic. You're not amusing at all.
Ajo has about 1000 residents year-round. It can get up to 1500 or more during the winter season (winter visitors).
The scenery is great and the people are very nice. It is VERY isolated (Phoenix and Tucson are about an hour and a half drive in both directions, Gila Bend is about 40 minutes north). There are no malls or shops (aside from small, independently owned ones). There is a Pizza Hut, Circle K and a grocery store. Ha. There are some family owned restaurants that are very good. The nights are beautiful and quiet. I still have family that lives there, and travel down a few times a year for a nice, relaxing visit.

Ive never lived in or been to Ajo but some friends of mine who used to live in Show Low loved it there. If I thought for a minute I was going to stay in Az the rest of my life, would consider living there.

I've lived in Ajo for five years and love it. Isolated describes it to a tee, but it is also within two hours of Tucson, Phoenix, the beach at Puerto Penasco (where I keep the sailboat) and surrounded by millions of acres of wilderness. Maybe we're isolated from the right things.

Ajo is pretty isolated. Quiet I'm sure. There are also other areas in southern arizona that I consider quiet but yet a bit closer to a city for shopping purposes etc. Vail, Mescal, J-6, Benson all in a more comfortable temp. zone due to higher elevation. Vail woud be hotter in comparison to the other three. Three points, Diamond Bell Ranch and Arivaca are quiet communities also, but not for people who are concerned about illegal immigrants. Although Arivaca is about 13 miles from the border with bigger issues then the other two. There are other towns by the Santa Catalina Mtns. that appear quiet but yet close enough for city shopping : Catalina, Oracle, San Manuel, Mammoth, Winkelman. Any of those would be a bit cooler than Ajo.

I love Ajo, probably for the same reasons other people don't like it. Isolated means it is surrounded by millions of acres of wilderness. I keep my sailboat at JJ's in Cholla Bay, less than two hours away. If I want to go to Phoenix, I take the bus found trip for $15, which beats gas. They even pick me up at Sam's Club, where I do my monthly shopping. Ajo shopping is like Bob's Pretty Good Grocery-- if you can't find it at Bob's, you can probably get along without it. It has a lot to do. I'm playing Lomov in Chekhov's The Wedding Proposal , for example. There's infinitely varied desert hiking, mountain climbing for the young and foolish, a big new Arts Center and developing art scene (the next Taos?), a natural history lecture series (with donuts) at the library. True, I do see all the movies six months late, but they seem new to me. If you want malls and crowds and instant gratification when you're bored and want to buy something, you'd hate it. If you like the outdoors, astronomy (incredibly dark skies), the Old West, and a low cost of living, this is jes' fine.

Tohono O'odham is an Indian reservation. Yes it's quiet and isolated, about as quiet and isolated as you'll ever get, but you're not just going to go in there and buy up a couple of acres and put a modular on it. They're a sovereign nation, as far as that goes.

Been in Kearny 'bout 5 years & love it. It's a true small town. Example - Today the Ace hardware folk had a customer appreciation day - free dogs, burgers, pop & chips. Saw a lot of friends there. When you go in the post office, pharmacy or whatever they call you by name.
The scenery is spectacular. Highway # 177, which runs from Superior, thru Kearny, to Winkleman, has just been designated a scenic route. The town spills down a slightly steep mountainside. A lake and mountains all around. true sonoran desert scenery - saguaros, prickly pear, etc. The town was planned in 1958 to replace the towns of Ray, Sonora & Barcalona when the shaft mine became an open pit.
We like the friendly folk. Most neighborly. Enough amenities here - groceries, drug store, restaurants, golf, airport. Weather is great bout 7 months a year. Hottern heck in the summer. It's an hour to Phoenix or Tucson. Many retirees & snowbirds moving here for the small town feel without the hassle of big town living. I highly recommend it.
