Williams (Phoenix: to live, shops, moving)

Can anyone tell me anything about Williams, AZ. I might be moving this fall and wanted to find out about housing.

It is a rural town but is on the brink of booming as Phoenix is moving north.

williams is a long ways from phoenix but is only 20 minutes of flag staff. Its a pretty nice town. Our train for the grand canyon left from williams. The town is called "the gateway to the grand canyon" It was by far the nicest town in arizona that i went to. The town is real small and theres 1 little strip there called the route 66 loop. I went into a few of the shops, like this indian jewlery/souvenier shop which was nice and there was these 2 cowboys in there playing cards. It was deffinitly a nice chill/small town. We ate at this 1960's diner and ice cream shop which was packed and they had very good food. Theres not a whole lot there but it would be a nice place to retire. It was rather rainy and cold when i went there (low 70's)

I forgot to mention, I wouldnt reccomend anyone talking the train from williams to the grand canyon. We took the train thinking that there was gonna be lots of nice scenery. I would of rather drove. The train is also rather expensive for what it is. If you wanna take a nice scenic train ride while in northern arizona, I reccomend the Verde Canyon Railroad, which is much more scenic.

I would not recommend moving there. A handful of reasons: 1)nothing to do but watch trains, 2) very rural and remote, 3)township has had repeat problems with political corruption, 4) drug use high, 5)it is a DYING town, 6) it is so cheap to live there because the population is transient and no one leaves there for long, 7) tourism and the train are the ONLY industry there. Don't let folks fool you into romanticizing this place. Once you leave your car, you will have seen everything you need to in 20 minutes. And then, you will really want to leave. I kid you not. And yes, I am an Arizona native. I know this town well.

And don't forget the important things like water, over the past few years the surrounding lakes have dried up. This is where they draw water for the town. No water there no water for the citizens. Have had to haul water in from what I have heard.

Good luck mate, but make sure you have plenty cash on you as you may find it hard to get work in williams, beautiful place lovely people, but like the others say 20 minuets and thats it!! all the best mate.

Oh, my... if all these projects come to life, we'll have to change our state motto to "The Theme Park State"... Not to be negative, but I find it a bit hard to believe...
