Agreed. I run into gay areas around 16th St to 16th ave. The gayborhood is expanding! oh noes its the end times. just kidding.
To expand on the gay topic, somewhat related to the OP. I find gays are more open in Phoenix than California. I lived in Sacramento for 20 years and ran into 1 gay person. I move to Phoenix and run into none stop gays. From my ex-boss to my neighbors.

I have noticed too that our Arizona Gays come across as being rather conservative----------especially by SF standards.

That is a little true. I consider San Francisco to be a little perverse. They have street fairs and celebrations in which sex acts are common out on the street. Even I was shocked at what I saw in San Fran, and often disgusted too. I don't think we are more conservative, we are just classier and more mature. Because I feel and many in the gay community in Phoenix agree, that Arizona and Phoenix are very libertarian, live let live type of a community.
Therefore, we don't have to flaunt our ways out in the street and do such things. In California it is common, even in the Bay Area to be a target of hate crimes much more so compared to Phoenix. The statistics prove that. I think because of the way Arizona and Phoenix grew in modern times the attitude of militant gay and anti-gay coalitions aren't grounded in Arizona. This is evident as well at pride celebrations in which Phoenix has more than one which include the popular Phoenix Pride, Rainbow Days, and the Phoenix Pride Gala. Another point of Phoenix tolerance is the lack of anti-gay protesters at the pride events. Even in San Fran the anti-gay forces are out in mass...I've talked about this before but on both days of Phoenix Pride all two protesters were standing near the entrance to "Pride in the Park." I've been to over a dozen prides in different cities and this lack of protest is unique to Phoenix.

Ironic: when I used to be actively associated with the Pagan/Wiccan community here in the Phx area; we used to meet at the above Dennys as well ca. 1998.

Yeah, as another poster noted, this is really an EXCELLENT point. Straight folks that are uptight about Gay sexuality tend to conveniently overlook the fact that Straight sexuality is out in the open EVERYWHERE (and often pretty darned revealing) - from TV shows and movies, to books, magazines, commercials, sports events, even the string bikinis at the beach and public swimming pools. Most folks think nothing of seeing a Straight couple walking arm in arm - and even such a couple making out will do little more than raise eyebrows a bit (or at most a "get a room" type comment from a passerby) - but let a Gay couple engage in those activities out in the open and suddenly folks are "offended". The fact is Straight sexuality is on public display ALL THE TIME - far more so than Gay sexuality. Folks just don't pay it as much attention for the very reason that it IS so very common.

The reason why straight sexuality is on public display all of the time is because the overwhelming majority of the world's population is made up of heterosexuals. Don't act like the world is anywhere near a 50/50 split between heteros and homos.

Where did I EVER say it was anywhere near 50/50?
That's not the point that I brought up. The point I was making was that heterosexuality is on display ALL the time - some of it a lot more graphic that what people complaining about Gays are objecting to. The folks up in arms about homosexuality don't seem to be screaming about that- they don't seem to care that sexuality between a man and woman is so prominantly on display. I know it IS "the norm" - but being "the norm" and being out on display are two different things.
Do you squawk about risque heterosexual TV commercials?
About thong bikinis on the beach?
Does it bug you that a man and woman hold hands in public?
If not, then you have no business sqawking about 2 gay folks holding hands in public - and that shouldn't matter whether it's 50-50 split or not.
I say if you are "offended" by a gay couple walking arm in arm that's YOUR problem - they are not doing anything that straight couples don't do in public ALL THE TIME.
THAT's my point.
