Default Where to Build a Small Adobe Home in the Mountains?

I'm a creative, free-spirited dude living in NJ, and have a dream to build a customized, funkadelic, but very modest adobe home on a small plot of land (3-5 acres) in the mountains or foothills of southern Arizona. I don't know much about real-estate, but I was wondering if plots like this exist. All of the real-estate I've researched is plots in the flat lands or of course the expensive properties near the major towns and cities. I like the terrain near Superior/Miami/Globe, but are there plots available for a new home? Also, probably a dumb question, but in general, how does the land get subdivided and zoned? Does the state own these tracts of land and then decide to sell to the public when it feels it wants it developed. Anyway, any feedback is welcome. P.S. - This is my first internet posting ever!

i don't know about Southern Az, but in Northern part we have a place OFF the grid . folks pretty much do what they want there . the lots go in bigger acreage than what you are looking for though .

We have a client who built a nice cabin in Show Low and he loves it up there. Seems very reasonable if you love the snow.

Good spot, but more "log cabin" than adobe. Adobe is more of a desert style than a (high) mountain style. Consider a totally funkadelic adobe-style mobile home in SE Arizona - like Pearce or Hereford. Much easier to build and maintain.

Thanks for the feedback; did you mean your primary residence is off-grid, and in what area of Northern, AZ? I was looking at some off-grid homes online...pretty funkadelic, but I'm not sure I want to drive an hour just to get groceries. Anyway, worth considering.

I just checked out Crown King on Google Maps; nice area, but it's right in the middle of a National Forest! That's cool, but maybe a little too isolated, and although I love those type of mountains, I'm looking more for the desert vibe. Thanks!

if using adobe, you'll want to stay in the south half closer to the desert environment....there are people here who have done exactly what you want to do....very possible, but may take time and more money than you could resell it for, but that may be OK with you....

your first internet post ever??....or just on this forum??.....welcome to city-data.....

Bisbee, Sierra Vista, Benson, Oracle are just a few cities in SE Az that may work for you....New River, Black Canyon City, Florence, Casa Grande, Congress are nearer to Phx and may be good for a funkadelic place.....lots of other towns.....

3-5 acres is do-able, but may be up to over $100K if in a halfway decent area near to groceries.....check zoning rules for building funkadelic stuff....building inspectors are a concern, too.....there are several adobe builders in the area....google the topic and see if you can wade thru the ads for solid info.....look for "house and garden" -type articles on people who built adobe places....

it's a great building material....lots to learn - house orientation, shading, how to stay cool in summer, warm in winter, ceiling height, ventilation, protecting the adobe surface, drainage, natural lighting............

Ponderosa:
I guess that was my point to Mouser; I'm looking for the desert-style environment, but with some vertical terrain - rocks, hills, etc. Pearce does have a good bit of affordable plots, but it's wicked flat. Hereford has potential, being right at the foot of the mountains. Thanks.
