Default Does anyone have solar panels for thier pool?

so they can swim in the winter? Do these work well and about how much are they to install if you already have the pool in?

We do not have solar panels, our pool is heated. Sorry, maybe someone else does and can help you out.

Jeepgirl,

Is it really exspensive to heat your pool in the winter when the water can get really cold?

What we do is - we'll turn up the heat 24-30 hours before we know we are going to have a party here at the house where we/others may want to swim. Then after - since we do not swim that often in winter - we'll turn it down. We use our hot tub more often in the cooler temps. It does not make that much more of a dent in our electric bill. Now, if we DID leave it on all winter long - we'd probably get a fruit basket from SRP at Christmas.

I've been thinking about getting a heat pump. It can heat the water in winter and COOL it in the summer. Electric rates are cheap on the peak plans, so it may be economical to run it at night. They cost about $4K.

You used to see solar for pools back in the 80s when there were state incentives. The ones I saw did not use panels but a whole mess of black tubes on the roof. Looked kinda messy.

Our water has been fine in the summer - no complaints here. Then again, if this goes into the caretaking and the technical aspects you will have to deal with Mr. Jeep. The extent of my pool care knowledge is how to turn the heater up and down - how to clean the debris and bugs out - and lastly, jumping in! I'm the "pool ornament!"

Thank you both for your replies. We are moving back to AZ in a few years and we will put in a pool, just trying to research and see if solar panels or puting a heating pump in would be better. But your right Jeep Girl there is no way you could keep the water warn all winter it would just be to exspensive.
