Actually, for some countries and some businesses it is indeed a concern, not just pubs and bars but other businesses as well. Of course people will not stop drinking, but they may decide to stay home instead of doing their drinking in a non-smoking establishment. Hmmm..maybe this could be a good thing? Means less drunk drivers on the roads.

I'm sure you can find links to articles which claim the smoking ban hasn't been bad for business, but their good luck doesn't do much to help those who HAVE been forced to close down.

The info on all these links seem to be one-sided, not pros and cons.

I know there are other articles where business owners say they have not suffered a loss of revenue. I just wanted to make a point that it was not a non-argument about the claim that some would suffer the loss of their business. Its a fact. It has happened. It will continue to happen to other business owners. Wetherspoons is a major player in the drinks and entertainment business in the UK. If they have been hurt by this just imagine what it could do to the smaller businesses who do not have the extra cash flow to ride out the losses. I know that some States are insisting that each business owner retain the right to decide for themselves if they wish to go non-smoking only. If I recall Indiana is one of them. I personally feel that this is a fairer option for all. I also stand by my comments about children being allowed to eat only in non-smoking areas in restaurants and public establishments.

I think that there should be bars that allow smoking, like Cigar rooms. The employees have to be willing to work there. It is the food/smoking combination that drives me nuts. I like to actually taste my food, not someone's unfiltered Kool. I will also vote for less drunks on the road too.

Well, time will tell concerning sales in bars and restaurants after the smoking ban goes into effect. A lot of the bars and restaurants in Nevada are having a rough time right now....concerning their sales. This is why they are going to challenge their smoking ban in the Nevada Supreme Court.

The reason I gave examples about "smells" is because this is what non-smokers keep bringing up non-stop. And there are other types of "smoke" that some people find offensive too....like fireplaces, BBQ's, etc. If we were in court, each side would have a chance to state their case, and offer a rebuttal to charges that were brought against them, etc. This is only fair, and the "American way."

Us non-smokers have rights too! I shouldn't have to choose between inhaling unhealthy second hand smoke and having a good time at the bar. There's nothing worse than coming home from a night out and having to lysol the crap out of my clothes because they smell so bad from all of the second hand smoke at the bar/club/pool hall, etc.... Smoking is a personal habit that can affect the health of others, therefore it should be banned in public places. If you want to kill yourself by smoking, that's your choice, just as long as it doesn't affect my health as well.

I am an on and off smoker over the past 20 years (on right now) and I personally do not mind this law. I am not a huge drinker to begin with so I do not frequent bars - and I am usually with non-smokers at restaurants and do not smoke in them anyway...no big deal. There is still one place that no one can stop me from smoking...out my car window and in my backyard! And just for you smarties that will comment on cig butts on the road. . . I put mine out into a water bottle and dispose of the bottle in a trash can. Cig butts on the road are not only nasty, can contribute to fires around here - and there is a good sized fine if caught. Peeves me as a smoker to no end when I see other smokers doing this.

Thank you thank you thank you! I wanted to bring that point up but didn’t want most smokers to get so upset that they chocked on their cigarette. I also have seen too many people smoking in cars or trucks and flip the butts out the window. I always wonder how many fires start up from that careless unthinking act of littler? I also wonder how many use their ashtrays inside the car? Not many I would bet!

And yes if you pull up to a stop light and wait to make a left hand turn, while you’re waiting look down at the curb on the left and see how many butts are piled up there. Unbelievable! The left side island near the intersection seems to be the cities ashtray for a lot of the smokers. I know that this comment has touched some nerves of smokers so I’ll point out that over the many years when I was a smoker I also did the same thing tossing the butt out of the window when waiting for a light to change. It’s a nasty habit and the large percentage of smokers just don’t know what they are doing.

If you’re a smoker, you need to buttout in the ashtray not the street!
