Crime is, relative to a metro area, nil. Your chances of criminal activity affecting your life would be significantly increased in Tucson or Phoenix.
Gangs......Douglas, yes. Wilcox, yes. Sierra Vista...wannabe gangbangers, but like alot of youth, they seem to be getting in trouble at much younger ages. People still leave keys in cars, doors unlocked. But crime still happens too. I'd rather take my chances in a suburban, semi rural area than out in the boonies.
Of course you'd be wise to check all the area out, including Green Valley south of Tucson. There area some small pockets along the border south of Tucson, near Nogales that have major problems with illegal trafficking, check the Tucson thread for info.
What area are you coming from?

Coming from South Florida, prior to that Missouri and prior to that Canada (and prior to that Eastern Europe) . Lived for a while in the concrete jungle of NYC too, didn't see the Sun for several months and left as fast as I could!
Looked into Patagonia area, the prices for land seem high! Or at least higher than what I saw online around St David, for example. Maybe it has to do with the natural beauty of the place?
Thank you for all the info. We do plan on coming out and checking everything out for ourselves. South Florida is very crowded, all I want is some peace and quiet and some mountain air...

Nothing here is going to compare greenwise. Even NYC with City Park will overshadow the "greenest" areas here.
Patagonia is higher due to retired personnel building mega homes in the hills around there. Nothing like driving out across open vista land and seeing a 6-7,000sq.ft. house built into the hillside.
St. Johns would be less expensive, it's "green" for Arizona, not far off the interstate and right next to Benson which has shopping sufficient to keep you out of the city.
Don't fall for a place called Sunizona or areas surrounding.....no utilities, no water, lots of land being auctioned off for back taxes. If you're wanting cheap land and freedom to roam, it's here, just got to look around. Alot of people live off grid, have wells or haul water. Water is not a massive problem here like it is in and around Flagstaff,Williams, but this is still Arizona, the land of dry Rivers.
Did you read the Sierra Vista remarks under Arizona city by city top of the section?

No, that's my next thing to do. I am sure there is cheap land that is decent, just takes a long time to run across such a lot. Fortunately, people like you are around to help out with advice. Thank you very much for that.

Would you happen to be a "pk" from Denver who lost a couple teeth in a biking accident? I was Patsy's best friend for a time. Let me hear from you if I'm right.

Hey drb, if your looking for some land and a home in Cochise county, the cheapest area that is safe and has amenities is by far, the area around Douglas such as Double Adobe, McNeal, Elfrida. One has to be careful that they don't buy property in a smuggling corridor, but that is true for the entire county. Patagonia is beautiful but probably double the price of where I live, (Double Adobe). One can purchase a four acre parcel with well/septic and late model manufactured for under 100,00.00. Actually, Sunizona is a nice place also, come on down and take a look. I have lived and owned property in S.Florida, San Diego,, Temecula, Hawaii, and now live on 6 acres with a saddle mule, donkey and three dogs and can saddle up and ride from my house. My place cost about the same as a new pick-up truck...

Hey Ogend, I reread your original post and realized you want green and tree's. That would be Ramsey canyon, Miller canyon, Stump canyon, Carr canyon area's of Sierra Vista,(expensive though). A less pricey alternative would be the east foothills of the Dragoons; west of Pierce and Sunsites, their are horse property's for sale in that area and you're at the base of the mountains with large tree's and overgrown greenery. Next time you visit drive up to the Cochise Stronghold area (east), and take a 'look-see...

Mike, thanks for the info. I read that you got a saddle mule and ride pretty much from home. That's exactly what I am looking for - I got a QH and a pack horse and all I want to do is saddle up and ride out for a few days at a time. Where do you live and where do you ride?

I had a place in an area called Rio Gonia. It was the extreme eastern part of Rio Rico, overlooking Sonoita Creek. I bought a 3/1 on 1.02 acres on city water for 47,500 in 2001. I showed my sister the view from my home office, she stated no one in her 50,000 employee company had a view that good, from their office. Didn't need A/C, either--4300 ft. elevation.
Mobile Homes and Manufactured Homes are not permitted outside of trailer parks, in Santa Cruz County.
