Yeah, the aerial shots especially do a good job of capturing the amazing surreal beauty of the place. Like many others I found Sedona to be one of those rarest of places that evoke the very same question in me as they do in many many other people: "How can a place like this be a mere accident of geology?"
THAT power - the ability to raise that very same question in person after person is (in my opinion) what gives Sedona it's reputation as a place of ancient mystic power - for it's hard not to automatically think "Someone made this deliberately, hence it is proof that there IS a God (of SOME kind)".
Sedona is not entirely unique in that regard - I've felt the same primeval stirrings in a few other select places I've traveled over the years - Yosemite Valley, a few choice faery-like locations in depths of the Olympic Rainforest, and most especially on Bora Bora - a visit to which literally changed my life. Place like those I've mentioned DO seem to have a power over people - awakening a sense of wonder at the creations of God (or whatever) and a realization of just how amazing and wonderful the universe TRULY is. As I said, it's my belief that it's THIS power (the ability to raise that very same question) over those that visit there is what gave rise to the belief of the ancient Indians (and more recently those of the New Age believers) that there is some special spiritual aspect to the place. It appears to be simply too amazing to be merely "accidental".
While I don't subscribe to any "magic" in the traditional (or even New Age sense), it's easy for me to understand WHY so many people subscribe to such beliefs about such places. I am a man of science and can intellectually understand the geological and climatical forces that created such a place, but even so I can barely fight off such mystical feelings myself.

That site looks a little outdated, and the article itself is from May 2006.
From your post I thought Sedona won some prestigous award from a reputable organization, not just some random person on the internet who's opinion is that it is the most beautiful place in America.
Sedona is a beautiful place, but definetly not the most beautiful in America, but it is in my "Top 10".

What a wonderful post. And, as far as Sedona goes, what's not to love. Beautiful area and definitely mystical.

It is one of the most breathtaking places I have ever been. I remember on a family trip where we also toured the Grand Canyon - going over the trip and my then 3 year old saying that the red rock place (Sedona) was the most beautiful place and his favorite part of the trip!
I described Sedona to friends as God saying to humans - I am going to give you something beautiful to look at - and as then he put his finger down to touch the earth.
