The biggest problem you'll see in phoenix is they have built things in the middle of the grid -- like Deer Valley airport, Scottsdale airport, cul de sacs, new developments --- soooooo its easy to occasionally get turned around.
Here's what I did - I drew my own map of the major streets and avenues on a yellow pad for quick reference in the car when I was out and about. That forced me to notice some major things about the grid. : A) On the East Side, Glendale turns into Lincoln; B) Thunderbird merges with Cactus and then separates again; C) Northern stops at the 51 FWY; D) On the West side, Olive Ave turns into Dunlap; E) 19th Avenue, 7th Street, and Scottsdale Road are the three main roads that go north~ south all the way through Phoenix. F) Tatum stops at McDonald, and G) Grand Avenue just does it's own thing diagonally across the city and all it's intersections are a little dicey
