My son, in his 20s, is moving to Sierra Vista. He has actually been offered a job there with a concrete company, so it sounds like he's moving there for the one thing everyone said in 2010 that SV doesn't have much of to offer. In any event, I was told by someone who lives in Tempe that SV is a bad area, so I Googled SV and found this post from five years ago.

Since no posts have been made in the past five years, I would love to hear from anyone who is actually living there now to get an accurate account of what SV is about. My son is actually on his way there right now as I type this! They were driving both their cars across the country from PA. They had to stop in Chicago on business, and then they were heading to AZ from there. Currently, they are in a hotel in Colorado. If it's as bad as what I'm hearing from a friend, I'd like to tell him to stop in Tempe instead and stay with friends they have there until we can figure this out! The story I am told is that there are rough gangs and Mexican Cartel in SV and that it's not even safe for a couple to walk to the store together at night. Could that much have happened in five years, or is my friend from Tempe maybe just a little misinformed?

Really hoping to hear from a current resident of SV ASAP! Time is of the essence!

Thanks much!

Why is he driving through Colorado???

Don't live in SV, but cartels running the town, don't really believe such a thing.

Silverocity, check your direct messages.

I read back through the replies on this post and actually laughed out loud. Sierra Vista is quiet compared to the cities I lived near in upstate NY. Some people are just not happy no matter where they live.

There are no gangs roaming the streets at night. If your son is not a heroin or meth junkie he will be just fine.

We were there for two days and didn't care for it much. Not a bad town but nothing special.

Thumbs down Sierra Vista is the worst place in the world

I lived in Sierra Vista for 20 years. I was born there. I attended school there. I still have family there. Let me tell you, it is the worst place you will ever live. The schools are terrible (I didn't realize how bad until I left AZ and met people who went to real schools). There is nothing to do, so kids inevitably turn to drugs (being so close to Mexico doesn't help). There are no jobs worth staying at for more than a few months and everything is much more expensive than it should be since the city is so far away from other population centers. The demographics of the city are also top-heavy and aging, which means there are a lot of dirt poor 20 somethings struggling to put food on the table and a lot of very old, and very myopic retirees who can't see the city for what it is - a cesspool. Avoid!

Sierra Vista median age: 33.8 years
Arizona median age: 33.1 years.

Hardly seems top heavy.

Sierra Vista median household income: $53,649
Arizona median household income: $47,826

Hardly seems poor

School ratings are average to slightly above:

Sounds to me like you are making stuff up.
