Default Rattlesnakes?

Hey ya'll,

Just wondering how many folks out there have had encounters with rattlesnakes on their land/homestead?

I've read tons of control measures to keep them at bay, but has anyone considered releasing Common Kingsnakes on their land to help control the rattlesnake population?

One fact of life to keep in mind, MangleMind . . .

Rattlesnakes are more afraid of you than you'll ever be of them. If you encounter most any snake, leave it alone, give it a safe exit and it will be gone in no time.

Snakes are very important here in the Desert Southwest.

I see rattlesnakes sometimes and other snakes that look like rattlesnakes (minus the rattle) but are not but I don't worry too much. Bummer is right, the desert needs them and they don't bother you too much.

I don't ever see any here in the city, but when I lived in Safford, AZ I would see them every so often. We do go on hikes quite a bit and we have seen several beside the trail (Fossil Creek, Peralta Trail, Etc). We are just walking along and we hear a rattling.. then we spot it just right to us! Very scary, but we have been close to them without even knowing it (until we hear the rattle). They blend in very well.

If you do yardwork, never stick your hand into a bushy area without testing it first with a stick. We had somebody in town get bit that way.

Easier said than done when their in the garage or in the house

And my worries concern the kids and our animals ...

2 already this season. First one was on a trail by our water tanks, and the second one was in one of the houses ...

I have lived in AZ for most of my life, and I have only seen a few live ones around Phoenix, mostly dead ones though.

I saw half a dozen baby rattlesnakes this week and a couple more last week. This was on my golf course at Dove Mountain.
