Actually that can indeed be true. One unfriendly person in a place you want to settle in is enough to move you elsewhere.

For instance, we have been looking hard at Cottonwood until we found that there is a very strong white supremist group there.

No problem for us. We simply won't consider Cottonwood and if we move anywhere near we will stock up on weaponry. We are both too old to put up with such primitive minded BS. We left Cochise County because of the white hate groups there; along with over 10 law enforcement agencies who can not or will not do what we pay them for.

Don't take my experiences with this sort of concern. Do your own homework but you can start here: Southern Poverty Law Center

There is one Black hate group in AZ and we don't care for them either.

Great observations. Sadly, Northern Arizona has white supremacists, including someone I know of who steals from elderly women.

In general, AZ is a very conservative, backwater area with lots of METH. Once you get out of the more tolerant areas (although NOT necessarily that liberal) such as Flagstaff and Sedona, anything is possible.

On the other hand, the Flagstaff City Council refused to pass a gay-civil-rights oridance this Spring (2008), and Flag is a college town that leans leftwards, so Flag is still living in the 19th century.

Places that don't allow have a lot of growth (such as Northern AZ, and also the Southeast US, as you refer to) hold on to racial prejudices, and homophobia, until liberal political leaders from the West and East Coasts move in and run for office and establish Pro-Growth, Socially Liberal policies.

Generally, the education level of a City should correlate with diversity and tolerance. Flagstaff - 41% have a bachelors of higher, that's good for a City w/ 52,000 persons (ref: City-Data.Com).

If you do settle in the area, stay *WITHIN* the City Limits of Flagstaff and Sedona if possible - that's my best advice!

Frankly Tom, your ideas are not going to happen - period. Sedona, Flagstaff and the Verde Valley are just fine. We don't need your "affordable housing" projects. Or your big box stores our outlet malls along I-17

However you NEED that economic development to stop unemployment, poverty, meth, and crime. Northern Arizona needs much more besides College Students and Retirees.

I'm mostly Libertarian, however, unlike Conservatives, I'm progressive, and recognize that we need to move forward economically w/ liberal economic policies, with low taxes and low regulations, so that everyone can start a business and buy a home.

Smart Growth and Impact Fees both have to be eliminated in order to reinstate Construction in Arizona.

Senator Russell Pierce, Republican, of Mesa tried to cancel Impact Fees last summer, and the Governor refused to do this. Russell Pierce by way of his efforts to cancel Impact Fees is a Hero to the Working People, who remember the AZ low unemployment and rapid growth of a few years ago.

Default Map Of Hate Groups

MZBEA:

Intersting web site that you posted; I noted this National Map on hate groups. Interesting that there are 19 in Arizona, yet just 5 in Utah, and 1 in New Mexico. SPLCenter.org: Hate Groups Map

[quote=Ponderosa;10956761]I'd "shoo" retirees away too. We have too many freakin' people in this state, particularly the rural areas...quote]

Ponderosa, your a riot and I wish you luck securing some space in Arizona free of the mob scene to enjoy the retirement you dreamed of. With your long history in the state maybe you know of a undiscovered jewel of a place that doesn't attract the refugees flocking to Arizona.

I don't see the appeal of Flagstaff to Seniors honestly, it's a liberal town full of college students.

The quote was "If you are retired and hate kids stay away" , I see their point, there are a lot of 55+ places in Arizona where there is a lot of hostility between people with kids and retirees who do not want to be assesed for schools, parks and other recreational facilities. Cities that were formed from 55+ Communities that had no schools etc. Perhaps it's an Arizona thing but not including "and hate kids" puts it out of context

Point taken... however... remember - you are still leaving voluntarily.

My point is that in this day and age no body can make any one else leave by force... against their will. Not withour dire consequences to them.

College students are normally drawn to liberal-thinking college professors, and they will hang out with liberal peers as well. This type of thing usually happens in and around colleges all around the nation. Eventually these ones will leave school... they will grow up and develop a more conservative outlook on life. Seniors recognize these types of behaviors, and will settle down in any city or town.

There's a subgroup of the over-55 set that loves to end up in college towns because 'they make me feel young again'. Plus the college provides a lot of cheap or free recreational and cultural opportunities, public transportation tends to be better when you get large number of 18-24 year olds who don't have cars, the school frequently has some sort of interesting lifelong learning program in place, and if the university is big enough to have a med school, possibly some very high level and cutting edge medical care.
