Are Flagstaff/Snowbowl aspens in full color yet?
Do you think next weekend will be too late, or should we go this weekend?

The Aspens on Mt. Lemmon had not changed color as of two weeks ago. I would think you still have plenty of time.

Not directly on the leaf turning subject, but I read an article on azcentral in the last few weeks that the aspen in Northern AZ are dying off, I'm not sure they know all the reasons why. I hope we don't lose them...they've always been one of my favorite trees.

It's getting pretty now.
The newspaper says the "peak" is the next 2 weekends.

Fire suppression....aspens naturally die off and it is fire that regenerates aspen forests....up here on Mt Graham we have had 2 large fires in the last few years...the Clark peak fire and the Nuttell Gibson complex fire....and now there are (especially in the older Clark fire area) literally thousands of Aspens some getting quite tall.
My understanding is that when fires sweep through aspens spring up then give way to the new ponderosa/fir/spruce forests that come up under them. |

By the way...I noticed the other day that the aspens are changing on Mt Graham, so I imagine that the Northern Az aspens are even further along.

was just up in Flag yesterday and today.....
the NE-facing slopes are in full yellow....
the slopes facing the city are just starting to turn, but not real apparent....during a hike up to Humphreys, there were lots of color up high and on upper portions of the Snow Bowl road....
that somewhat-famous wide band of yellow that encircles the Peaks about halfway up hasn't occured yet, but felt imminent....
the cooler weather coming up this week will probably hasten the change....as BillR says, I'd say the peak will be in 1-2 weeks.....

That must be ... named for the Rev. Billy Graham, right, Pastor Safford ?
On a more serious note, is this mountain near Mt. Lemmon, or in the vicinity?
Also, anyone this year seen the Aspens in the Durango area of SW Colorado?
What area has the best Aspens?
Also, does anyone know why the City of Flagstaff does not include Aspens on their Recommended Plant List? |
