Basically, the farther south you are in Scottsdale, the closer you are to east-central Phoenix, which is pretty ghetto. That's the area in which the now-notorious Baseline Killer has been stalking victims. So, if you're in old Scottsdale between Indian School and McDowell, you're closer to the 'hood than you are if you're in north Scottsdale. But old Scottsdale, or "Old Town", is also what I would say is the most lively, fun part of the city. The general rule in Scottsdale is, the farther north you are, the nicer & more expensive (& more boring) it gets. But it's also safer. Just depends on your priorities and what you can afford.

Like Steve said, the farther south you get in Scottsdale, the more ghetto-like the area becomes. Old Town Scottsdale is a great area, it isn't ghetto.

Condos are plentiful, I've seen very nice ones for $200,000. Central Scottsdale has the majority of affordable condos, North Scottsdale is comprised mainly of gated communities where a condo runs anywhere from $250,000-$600,000.
