Well first off. Which route are you planning on taking? Since you are going to Kingman, I am going to assume you will be taking 40 across. Through Texas, the only attraction I can point you to is Cadillac Ranch just outside Amarillo. There is also a copycat, called Beetle Ranch, all VW's.
I do not know of any ghost towns along 40 getting through Arizona, the only ghost towns that I am aware of is in the Sonoran Desert portion of Arizona. You will be passing though the Plateau and mountain regions of Arizona, and then the Mohave to the west.
Along the way, you can swing through Winslow Arizona, and take a picture with the "Take it Easy" statue there. The town is not much to see, but it does give you that peaceful easy feeling of simple life. (No pun intended.) Also not far in Holbrook, you can see the petrified forest.
While you are up there, it is a ways out of the way, you can see the Grand Canyon. Along the way to the grand canyon, you are passing through Navajo nation, and there are allot native American vendors selling homemade rugs and blankets and tourist trap kind of stuff. You can't pass through Navajo Nation without buying a cheap little dream catcher to hang up on your rear view mirror. That was the first thing I did when I bought my new truck.
Once you get through Flagstaff, you can take route 66 if you have the time. (It run parallel with I40, but ends and turns allot.)
Stop off in Seligman, AZ, the birthplace of Route 66. It is still almost 100% preserved stuck in the 50s and 60's old fashioned.
After Seligman, there isn't much else to see other than the vast beauty of the high desert, rolling mountains and Joshua trees. You are in the Mohave desert at this point. It is very beautiful, but not quite as spectacular as the Sonoran Desert IMO.
Enjoy your trip.
