Flagstaff to Kanab in a day
Friends -
I will be driving through Flagstaff and on up to Kanab. I have been to Grand Canyon many times so I plan on skipping it this time, do you have any recommendations on things to do or see while on the way, maybe things only locals might know about.
Also, is the food still great at Cameron Trading Post
thanks

two choices for the drive: the old route thru Jacob Lake on the Kaibab Plateau or the "new" (since the early 1960s) thru Page.....
the Jacob Lake route is more curvy in sections and cooler up on the piney plateau....you'll cross the new Navajo Bridge (about 1995) over the Colorado and can walk out onto the narrower old bridge....go down to Lee's Ferry on the river if you have time....
the Page route climbs up on the plateau E of the river and goes across the bridge by Glen Canyon dam....stop in at the Hayden visitor center next to the dam....if you have time, go into the Lake Powell area for a fee...later, you'll cross the Cockscomb, a spectacular natural reef of rock....if into history, stop in at the Paria townsite near the Cockscomb.....
either way has great scenery - the Jacob Lake choice will take about an hour longer....haven't eaten at Cameron TP lately as I avoid the places where tour buses stop!

Actually, Flagstaff to Kanab via Jacob's Lake is significantly shorter than Flagstaff to Kanab via Page. I live in Phoenix, but grew up in Utah, and I do that drive at least 6 times a year. I've timed every single way, and have found the Jacob's Lake drive is shorter. It's also WAY more scenic than Page, and much more fun. There's a ton to stop and do along the way.

I hear it's a very small pond a mile or two from downtown Jacobs Lake....might even exist only after snow melts....

Gee, you are always in a hurry, aren't you? (I remember your other thread about the Utah parks). Can't advise you on the route, but have fun, and take the time to enjoy what you see.

If you go via Page, just before town a few miles off of Rte.98 to upper and lower Antelope Canyon, a famous set of slot canyons. Antelope Canyon
If you're a western buff then just east of Kanab is picturesque Johnson Canyon Rd. which along the way is the set of the western series Maverick. Also in Kanab is the famous Parrylodge , a great all you can eat daily brunch at a great price. In the dinning room are countless photo of movie stars who stayed at the lodge while filming westerns over the years.
