Post Payson and the Rim?

Hi,

I have a problem with driving on roads with big drop-offs on either side, therefore I'm skipping the Apache Trail as I heard it is scary!

I have driven to Payson and even though you are headed up, you don't feel like it. Perfect for me! My question though, is once you are in the town/city of Payson then is the road to the Rim steep or spooky?? Maybe you need to be height-phobic like me to understand but my drive through the mountains to Prescott, though pretty, was NOT my 'cup of tea'. Hopefully one of these days I can get over this...but haven't yet!

Thanks for your input!

260 to the rim is an easy drive, not scary at all. If you go that way, turn left onto FR 300 right at the top - three vistas of the rim and some non-scary hiking on a paved path.
IMO, 87 thru Strawberry and Pine up the rim is somewhat hairy driving - one set of switchbacks as you go up.

Even if you drive on Rim Rd, you don't get too close to the edge, but you get some GREAT views from your car. I love driving up ther rim, even if I am not camping it's a great escape.
