Smile Thinking about moving to Az

My husband and I are currently living in Missouri and are thinking about moving to Az. His health is really bad (COPD and asthma) and we think that moving somewhre with low humidity and mild climates would help him. We have two young boys ages 5 and 11months so we want to be somewhere where there are other kids around. we live in a small town and like that. We also are living off of my husbands diability so we need someplace that either has a low cost of living or where it won't be difficult for me to find work in the medical records department of a hospital. We have heard that Yuma was good as far as humidity and climate was concerned.

Check out Sierra Vista. It is a whole lot nicer place than Yuma. Yuma is not a small town - its over 100000 people and it is kind of ugly IMO. The summer heat is a killer and the summer humidity can be horrible as well. Yuma gets moisture that moves up from the gulf of California on top of the heat.

Sierra Vista is located SE of Tucson and is home to the Army's Fort Huachuca. It is a clean, low crime place with all the shopping you need on a day to day basis with a trip to Tucson for the rest an easy couple hours away. The temperatures there are lovely - a fairly dry 90s in summer and 50/60s in winter. It rains a lot in summer - a welcome relief - from storms that build over the nearby mountains and drift into the valley.

We visited Az a few years ago for Christmas and stayed in Pinetop Az. We really liked it there to visit but it was really hard for my husband to breathe with that high of an elevation. We did go to Phoenix for a day and it was much easier for him to breathe there. So we are looking for someplace that has 1. low humidity. 2. Mild climates. 3. Small town feel 4. Safe for families 5. Medical facilities near by and 6. not to high of an elevation

Maybe Casa Grande, partway between Phoenix and Tucson. It is not exactly small, but we live about 8 miles from town so not in the thick of it, and it has everything we need. There is also a hospital and quite a few clinics, including specialty clinics. It is hot in the summer, but wonderful right now

Pinetop is 6800' elevation. In addition to thinner air, the climate will be harsher in terms of colder winter temperatures and even snow. Sierra Vista is at 4600'.

Kingman, AZ might be a good fit for you. At 3400', our weather is fairly mild. Not too hot in the summer and not too cold in the winter. Being fairly far from any major cities or agriculture, we have clean air and no pollution worries. Medical facilities are excellent here. We already had a very good hospital, but there's a new one which just opened across town as well. Cost of living here is much lower than in the Phoenix area as well. Kingman is also centrally located 100 miles from Las Vegas, and close to Lake Havasu and Bullhead City, and Laughlin, AZ.

Kingman is worth investigating. I seem never to think about that part of the state when questions come up.

When I inquired on this forum about moving to AZ for my dd's allergies, several natives told me that the Phoenix area is not good for people with breathing difficulties, asthma, etc. because of the high levels of air pollution and the dust storms that form in the valley. They recommended somewhere outside of the valley with a slightly higher elevation and less air pollution.

I use Claritin about 5 months out of the year in Phoenix. I believe my allergies are from the dry air/dust. Usually the worst from Feb - Apr and Sep - Nov.

I was suspect that some parts of Az are more expensive than others, just like any other state. right now where we live in Mo we pay $850 for a 3 bedroom 2 bath 2 car garage that is about 1500 sq ft. We would love to find a nice 2 bedroom place for about $700 in a safe neighborhood. It seems that parts of Az has a lot of spanish speaking people. My husband speaks it quite well but I don't know any spanish so I don't want to live somewhere where my not knowing spanish will go against me when looking for work. I have a feeling wherever we end up in Az it will be better than Missouri!
