Driving to texas
Hey,
I was wondering if anyone could help me out with I-40. I am going from oregon to texas and it looks like if you go from california over, there are some high elevations in flagstaff to cross. Does it get shut down due to snow and if so when. Any extra insight is awesome, or even an alternate route. Thanks!

There should be no problem this time of year in Northern Arizona regarding snow on the road. You will be just fine. Chances are you won't even see any snow while passing through, if you are making the drive real soon.

The first question that pops in my head is . . . Where in Texas?
Depending on your destination, I would seriously consider I-10 to eliminate any negative weather possibilities.

The worst weather in Texas he is going to see, even up in the Panhandle is maybe a small flurry or some heavy cold rain.
I have lived in Texas the past 5 years; and have been in every corner of the massive state.

You will probably encounter snow in New Mexico, I used to take the I-40 to the Las Vegas area, and this time of year there might be snow, just check the weather.

Moderator cut: orphaned quote
You are mistaken - I-40 does not go anywhere near the Las Vegas area. Please remember - I drive the "route" almost every week.
The closest I-40 comes is over 100 miles away from Las Vegas.

I'd do US 395 over 40 to 95 to Parker. East on 72 and onto I-10 coming east. Use AZ 85 to bypass Phoenix on I-8 and then back on I-10 to El Paso

Like Bummer said, it really does depend where you're going in Texas. It's also depends on the time of year.
If you're planning a trip this winter, the weather along the trip has the POSSIBILITY of being iffy at best. The Panhandle of Texas is susceptible to pretty intense blizzards during the winter season. I-40 travels through the higher elevations of Arizona and New Mexico, so wintry weather is also a possibility there.
I-10 is a much safer choice, again depending on where you're final destination is. You might encounter a flurry or two between Benson and the New Mexico state line, but that should be about it as far as weather hazards.

I-40 is a pretty drive. But, during the winter, there are areas where you are more likely to not only see snow but, drive in/through it. The Kingman area east for some 20/30 miles. A 50 mile (or so) radius around Williams. Of course Flagstaff. Then Winslow and Holbrook..
BUT, being it is an Interstate - ADOT does an excellent job of keeping the highway maintained and, when necessary, plowed.
